Plot Details Revealed for Blumhouse & Damon Lindelof’s Action-Thriller The Hunt

Earlier this year, details emerged about Damon Lindelof's upcoming action-thriller The Hunt. Though the official synopsis has yet to be revealed, some specific plot details have been announced , along with a new theatrical release date.

After breaking out as a co-creator and writer on the ABC television series Lost, Damon Lindelof has since crafted a successful career in both film and television with standout projects like Ridley Scott's Alien prequel PrometheusHBO's critical darling The Leftovers, and the upcoming Watchmen series based on Alan Moore's comic which will feature a wholly original storyline. Now, Lindelof is heading back to the big screen in collaboration with Blumhouse Productions for a "subversive" thriller called The Hunt. The movie is reportedly inspired by American politics - not unlike Blumhouse's Purge series - and a more detailed breakdown of its synopsis has officially been revealed.

According to Bloody Disgusting, The Hunt's premise borrows inspiration from movies like The Most Dangerous Game, Battle Royaleand The Belko Experiment, and follows a group of working-class characters who are being violently pursued by dangerous assailants. Though there is nothing in the way of an official plot, class warfare will evidently be taken literally in The Hunt, with status and political allegiances serving as a backdrop for the story's impending horrors. The film will be directed by Craig Zobel (Z for Zachariah), who also directed episodes of The Leftovers.

As is the case with most of Lindelof's projects, any further details surrounding The Hunt are being kept in the dark. Lindelof has earned a reputation for utilizing the narrative "mystery box," which was officially coined by J.J. Abrams, who worked with Lindelof on Lost. However, despite the mystery, Universal did announce that the movie will be released in September 2019.

Politically-charged thrillers are nothing new in Hollywood, and have even been a genre centerpiece in recent years. In fact, Blumhouse itself has led the charge on this style of movies, so it's no surprise that producer Jason Blum would attach himself to this project. The Purge series makes no effort to distance itself from any overt political angles, while movies like Get Out - which earned an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay - focused on politics through a more racially-fueled perspective. Now, it appears as though The Hunt's storyline will be business as usual for the studio.

The Hunt will be released in theaters on September 27, 2019.
