Sherlock Holmes 3 is the follow up to 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and the continuation of the journey of Robert Downey Jr.'s version of the titular character alongside Jude Laws's Dr. John Watson. The first two films in the period mystery thriller saga, which were both directed by Guy Ritchie, have a combined $1 billion haul at the global box office against a total of just $215 million production budget proving that the franchise is a profitable one for Warner Bros. ROBERT DOWNEY JR. IS BACK AS SHERLOCK HOLMES IN SHERLOCK HOLMES 3
Robert Downey Jr. will reprise the role of Sherlock Holmes in the third Sherlock Holmes film. Fresh from the success of the first Iron Man that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008, the actor boarded another franchise-in-the-making by signing up to play the titular character in Guy Ritchie's live-action movie adaptation based the character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He reprised the role in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows two years after and is now headed back to the 1800s for his third adventure as the popular fictional private detective.

JUDE LAW IS BACK AS JOHN WATSON IN SHERLOCK HOLMES 3
Like Downey Jr., Jude Law will also be back to reprise his role as Dr. John Watson. The last time fans saw the character, he was gearing up for his long-awaited honeymoon with Mary (Kelly Reilly) after Holmes' supposed death by the end of A Game of Shadows. Law has also talked about what fans can expect in the threequel, saying that they "hope to propel the story forward" and "the essence of the story is their codependency." According to him, it also appears like it will take a significant time jump before the movie picks up.

SHERLOCK 3 IS SCHEDULED TO RELEASE IN DECEMBER 25, 2020
Sherlock Holmes 3 is currently locked in for a December 25, 2020 release date. This sticks with the Sherlock Holmes franchise's usual December release with the previous two movies hitting theaters in December (2009 and 2011, respectively). The film doesn't seem like it will have much competition on their chosen release date - at least for now. Aside from the animated musical film, Sing 2, other studios that usually have tentpole films during that time have yet to announce anything for that specific date; however, Avatar 2 is set to release the preceding week. If the sequel is anything like the first Avatar, that could be a danger to Sherlock Holmes 3's box office prospects.

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS SETS UP SHERLOCK HOLMES 3
After successfully foiling Professor Moriarty's (Jared Harris) plans to instigating a war in Europe in Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, Holmes seemingly sacrificed himself to take out Moriarty and protect Watson and his new wife, Mary, from another of Moriarty's schemes. The Sherlock and Moriarty fell off a balcony and into the Reichenbach falls below and were immediately presumed dead with Watson spearheading an emotional funeral and tribute to his fallen friend. However, just when Watson was gearing up to leave for his overdue honeymoon, he received a package containing Mycroft's breathing device. Suspicious that Holmes may have survived the fall, he went after the delivery man to find out more. It's only then that it was revealed that Holmes has concealed himself in one of the lounge chairs at Watson's office using one of his quirky suits. Peaking at Watson's memoir, he added a question mark following the words "The End," effectively setting up Sherlock Holmes 3.

GUY RITCHIE MIGHT RETURN TO DIRECT SHERLOCK HOLMES 3
There's not any official word yet on whether or not Guy Ritchie will be back in the director's chair for Sherlock Holmes 3. After helming the first two movies in the film franchise, the 50-year-old director is heavily rumored to return behind the camera for the next installment in the period saga. Since working on 2011's A Game of Shadows, Ritchie went on to direct films in varying genres with 2015's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and 2017's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He's currently busy with Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin slated to come out next year.

SHERLOCK COULD BE THE LONGEST RUNNING LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION OF THE LORE
After the first Sherlock Holmes film came out in 2009, a couple of adaptations on the small screen followed. In 2010, BBC One debuted the critically-acclaimed mini-series titled Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes and Watson in the present time, which so far has had four seasons. However, while it remains popular, its future is currently uncertain as its leads are busy with their respective endeavors. In 2012, CBS launched Elementary starring Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson. Running more like a procedural and also set in the modern day, the show has run for six seasons with a seventh season on the way. However, whether or not it will move past that remains to be seen. If not, the Sherlock Holmes movie franchise will be the longest running live-action adaptation of the material considering that the threequel won't arrive until 2020.

THERE IS NO TRAILER YET FOR SHERLOCK HOLMES 3
With the movie more than two years from hitting theaters and with no official production date announced, marketing for Sherlock Holmes 3 is still quite a ways away. Depending on when filming is scheduled to begin and expected to wrap up, the promotion may start toward the end of principal photography. Similar to the standard Hollywood marketing schedule, there's a good chance that the first trailer will be released a year at most from its release, meaning fans shouldn't expect to see anything but promotional images in late 2019.
