The Gifted season 2 will have an entire episode dedicating to revealing Polaris' origins, and how her parents died. The second season of FOX's Marvel Comics-based series, about an underground group of mutants trying to escape capture, premiered this week and concluded with Lorna giving birth to a daughter, whom she named Dawn.
Like her father, Magneto, Lorna has the ability to manipulate metal, and her powers grew dangerously unstable while she was in labor. At the end of season 1 she made the decision to join the Hellfire Club, leaving the Mutant Underground behind. Like many mutants, Polaris has grown tired of living in constant fear and having to make sacrifices in order to survive, and has aligned herself with the Hellfire Club's goal of fighting back against humanity and seeking a mutant homeworld.

Speaking to ComicBook.com during a set visit, Polaris actress Emma Dumont revealed that The Gifted season 2 will delve deep into Lorna's past. "Later on in the season, there’s an entire episode dedicated to Lorna’s background, how she gets the way she is, how she grew up," Dumont said. "There are even references to how her parents passed in the plane crash, which we know, comic book readers know, that that was because of Lorna... It was her fault. So that's very tragic.”
Dumont is referring to the revelation in X-Factor #243 that Polaris was responsible for the plane crash that killed her parents. Polaris was the product of an affair between her mother, Suzanna, and Magneto. When Suzanna's husband found out about the affair, he took the family up in an airline so that he could confront his wife, even threatening to deliberately crash the plane. However, it was ultimately Polaris who brought the plane down: frightened by the shouting and too young to properly control her powers, she unleashed a wave of electromagnetic energy that tore the aircraft apart.
This won't be the first time that we've seen a mutant on an X-Men-adjacent TV show trying to learn the truth about their famous father. FX series Legion follows Charles Xavier's son, David, and cleverly explored David's heritage (without the need for a Patrick Stewart cameo) by showing Xavier's battle with the series' big bad via an animated chalkboard drawing. It's similarly unlikely that Magneto himself will actually appear in The Gifted, or even be named. Showrunner Matt Nix has explained that the show is avoiding mentioning Magneto by name because "we don’t want to stumble into movie territory." That said, Magneto is canonically Polaris' father in the show, and it will be interesting to see The Gifted handles that fact.
