The Prodigy Trailer & Poster: Taylor Schilling's Son Has Issues

Orange is the New Black's Taylor Schilling plays a mother whose son may be possessed by an evil entity in The Prodigy teaser trailer and poster. Originally titled Descendant, The Prodigy hales from several creatives with experience in the horror genre, including producers Tara Farney (The Rite) and Tripp Vinson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose), as well as director Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact) and writer Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train). The latter has been especially busy of late and wrote next year's Pet Sematary and The Grudge reboots, in addition to this film.

Schilling stars in The Prodigy as Sarah, a single mother who notices some disturbing changes in her young son's behavior and eventually begins to suspect that something supernatural is afoot. Jackson Robert Scott costars in the film as Sarah's son Miles, having previously played (unfortunate) Georgie Denborough in last year's IT movie adaptation. Other key cast members here include Colm Feore (House of Cards) as Arthur Jacobson, a fellow whom Sarah reaches out to, in an effort to battle her son's (potentially literal) demons.

Orion Pictures has now released a teaser trailer for The Prodigy online, along with the movie's first poster. You can watch the film's trailer in the space below, followed by the (naturally, creepy) one-sheet.

The Prodigy teaser mostly consists of footage from two key scenes in the film; the first concerning Jacobson's attempt to hypnotize Miles and determine if he really is possessed, and the second involving a late-night encounter between Sarah and Miles that culminates with (what else?) a jump scare. McCarthy's horror movie has already been compared to genre classics like The Omen based on its premise and the teaser trailer likewise brings James Wan's first Insidious film to mind (as well as The Conjuring spinoff Annabelle with its final big scare). Still, derivative it may be, The Prodigy otherwise seems acceptably spooky thus far.

While it remains to be seen if The Prodigy holds a candle up to next year's most buzzed-about horror films, Orion isn't necessarily banking on the movie becoming a smash success. The Prodigy is set to open on February 8, 2019 and will face-off directly with The LEGO Movie 2 and the Liam Neeson action-thriller Cold Pursuit at the box office. There will be competition for the horror crowd's attention thanks to the Buhler-scripted Jacob's Ladder remake (assuming it sticks with its February 1 date), but on the whole The Prodigy shouldn't have too much trouble attracting an audience that's in the mood for yet another addition to the "spooky kid" movie pile.
