Why Deadpool 2 PG-13 Cut Is Happening, According To The Writers

Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have explained their reasoning behind the upcoming PG-13 release of the film. Ryan Reynolds’ follow-up to Deadpool released earlier this year, and it proved just as popular with audiences as the first, becoming the sixth highest grossing film of the year so far. Then, not too long after Deadpool 2’s run at the box office, Fox announced that a PG-13 version of the film would hit theaters in December.

Many fans were puzzled by this development, considering the original Deadpool only ever released as an R-rated feature intended for adults. Others speculated that this was a move intended to see how the character of Deadpool would fare in the PG-13 world of Disney (which acquired Fox and all of its assets earlier this year and will be presumably completed early next year) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While this line of reasoning certainly makes a lot of sense, writers Reese and Wernick have revealed their true intentions behind making a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2.

Talking with CinemaBlend, Reese and Wernick said that the decision came down to demographics and the families and, more importantly, kids who did not get to see either Deadpool film. For the writers full thoughts and revelations behind a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 and their motivations, read below:

“There is that segment of the population who we've treated to a great disservice by not letting them see Deadpool, and we've sort of driven a wedge between parents and their tweener kids who aren't quite old enough to see it, and are bitter about it. And parents who were mad that Deadpool is of a certain rating, and that their kids whine all the time about it. So we're trying to serve that demographic, in particular.”

This is as good a reasoning as any for a Deadpool 2 PG-13 cut (which will reportedly be re-titled The Deadpool Before Christmas for this version to coincide with the December release date) and will certainly appease parents whose kids weren’t quite old enough to watch the original, R-rated version of the film. It also brings up the question of whether or not there will ever be a similar PG-13 cut of the original Deadpool, though, as of now, there’s been no word on that.

Either way, it’s clear that everyone involved with the new PG-13 cut is taking it very seriously, as it was also recently revealed that new Deadpool 2 scenes were filmed two months ago that add a new, Princess Bride-inspired framing device for the film (even including a festive-dressed Deadpool relating the story to a grown up Fred Savage). Whether this new Deadpool 2 appeals to both kids and the original, adult audience remains to be seen, but at least there will always be the R-rated cut for those latter fans.
