Marvel Studios has no doubt had a critically and financially successful year with their movies. So far, three films have been released in 2018 for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Black Panther started Disney’s year on a high note, with the movie bringing in more than $1 billion at the global box office. Most Marvel films thus far have been entertaining to say the least, but Black Panther managed to win over both fans and critics.
Black Panther did so well that Disney is also submitting the movie for several of the Oscar categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. The other two films that have been released this year, Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-man & The Wasp, also turned a profit for Disney. However, Black Panther still beat out both when it came to the domestic box office numbers.
Needless to say, many people consider Black Panther one of the best films in the MCU. Between the cultural significance of the film, the incredible directing, and the popular opinion that Killmonger is one of the best MCU villains, Black Panther has gone above and beyond from what people have come to expect from a Marvel movie.
That being said, every movie has some type of a flaw. Black Panther not only suffered from a few big plot holes, but the movie was also riddled with smaller continuity errors that most people probably missed.
Here are the 20 Mistakes In Black Panther Only True Fans Noticed.
20 The Jabari Are Vegetarians
During Black Panther’s runtime, there are several different tribes introduced to movie-goers. One of these tribes is called the Jabari, which is led by a man named M’Baku; the man who first battled T’Challa for the throne. After Killmonger defeats T’Challa in ritual combat, Nakia, Shuri, Ramonda, and Ross visit M’Baku to ask for help. When Ross tries to speak, M’Baku silences him, threatening to feed him to his children if he spoke again.
M’Baku then starts laughing and says that his people are vegetarians. That being said, when M’Baku saves T’Challa’s life, he explains to his family that a Jabari fisherman found T’Challa. If they are vegetarians, they probably wouldn’t have fisherman.
19 Okoye’s Spear
After Ulysses Klaue escapes from T’Challa’s crew and the CIA during the South Korea casino scene, an elaborate car chase breaks out between the two groups. During one of the shots, Okoye is riding on top of a car and throws her spear to destroy one of Klaue’s vehicles. A few shots later, Okoye is still on top of the car when Klaue uses his arm canon to destroy her car.
In order to save herself from falling, Okoye uses her spear and the hood of the car to slide to a stop. The only issue here revolves around how Okoye got her spear back. Some may claim that she went to pick it up, but in a high-speed chase this seems incredibly unlikely, especially since the spear would have been stuck within the metal of the car.
18 Killmonger Graduation From Annapolis At 19
After Ross is brought to Wakanda and saved by Shuri, he wakes up and is given a grand tour of Shuri’s lab, which doesn’t make sense to begin with. Besides the point, Ross gives T’Challa, Nakia, and Shuri the rundown on Killmonger’s history. He claims that Killmonger graduated from Annapolis (a US Naval Academy) at age 19 and then lists a number of Killmonger’s accomplishment.
While Erik is no doubt a great warrior, it is impossible for him to have graduated Annapolis at age 19. People can’t join the US Naval Academy until age 17, and it takes 4 years to graduate, regardless of how skilled you are. With this fact, the earliest age Killmonger could have graduated from Annapolis was at age 21.
17 The Listening Device On Ross
During the scene when Ross interrogates Klaue, Okoye and T’Challa slip a listening device on Ross’ left shoulder so they can hear what Klaue is telling Ross. If the room has a one-way mirror, it would be assumed that it also has a speaker system to allow people to hear the conversation from behind the glass.
The listening device itself also reappears and disappears throughout the scene. When Ross leaves the room to go talk to T’Challa and Okoye, the listening device is missing from his left shoulder in one shot, and then reappears in the next. It’s a minor detail, but there is no denying that it stands as a continuity mistake within the film.
16 Klaue Doesn’t Age
Throughout the 20 movies that have been released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, filmmakers have often included flashbacks to fill in the plot. Most of the time, if a present-day character appears in the flashback, some level of CGI will be used to make the actor or actress appear younger. That being said, it didn’t happen with Klaue in Black Panther.
When T’Chaka confronts Killmonger’s father, he pulls up a hologram of Ulysses Klaue to show the man who stole Vibranium from Wakanda. The problem is that Klaue looks exactly the same in present-day as he does in the flashback, which takes place in 1992. Some people appear to never age, but after nearly 30 years, some signs of aging would have shown through.
15 T’Challa’s War Paint
The ritual fights between T’Challa and M’Baku, and eventually Killmonger, were some of the most stunning scenes in the movie. Having the fights take place atop a waterfall added an extra sense of suspense, but also paved the way for continuity errors. In both of T’Challa’s battles, he has war paint on his face, chest, and back.
That being said, the pattern of the war paint on his forehead changes several times before the fighting even begins. It, of course, changes more as the fighting occurs, but in certain scenes it seems to have washed off, yet the other markings on his body don’t seem to be affected by the water.
14 A Very Uninformed Museum
Early on in the movie, Killmonger and Klaue set up an elaborate scheme to steal a Vibranium artifact from a museum in London. The scene opens with a shot of Killmonger standing in front of a display of artifacts and masks before an expert comes to assist him. Killmonger asks where several of the masks are from, but shouldn’t the museum have descriptive cards to inform museum attendees?
Nearly all museums have these types of descriptive cards so that people can learn about the artifacts, but this museum didn’t to help move the plot along. The scene was an interesting way to get the Vibranium artifact in the hands of Killmonger and Klaue, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
13 Nobody Is Interested In The King
Shortly after T’Challa defeats M’Baku in ritual combat, he is seen walking through Wakanda with Nakia. The scene is important, as it shows Nakia pleading with T’Challa to reach out to the rest of the world, but there is one thing off about the scene. Nobody in the crowd seems to notice that their newly appointed King is walking among them.
One would think there would be some type of excitement from the citizens if their King was walking among them, but the extras don’t even seem to look at T’Challa as he walks by. Granted, the extras were more than likely given instructions on how to act and what to do, but it seems unrealistic that the King of Wakanda wouldn’t attract more attention.
12 Earth’s Appearance
The very first scene of Black Panther is of T'Chaka's brother, N’Jobu, telling his son Erik the history of Wakanda. The animated sequence shows a Vibranium meteorite crashing into Earth millions of years ago. The entire scene brings people up to speed about the abilities of the Wakanda people and the history of the Black Panther, but the animated sequence contains a mistake.
When the meteorite crashes into Earth, the globe depicted is a modern Earth, not one that was around millions of years ago. The continents would have looked significantly different than how they look currently. That being said, the scene was supposed to be the imagination of Erik, so if he didn’t know about continental drift, it’s fair that the Earth would look modern in his mind.
11 Nakia’s Detective Skills
From a cinematic standpoint, the South Korea casino scene is one of the best scenes of the entire movie given the incredible camera work. That being said, there are some mistakes within the scene. During the scene, both T’Challa and the CIA are going to the casino to intercept Ulysses Klaue. In one shot where Nakia is at the bar, she tells T’Challa and Okoye that three people from the US had entered the club.
Even though Nakia is supposed to be an incredible spy, there is just no way she could have known that the people were from the US just by looking at them. She hadn’t even heard them talk or seen them interact with other people before she came to the conclusion, which really just seems like a mistake.
10 T’Challa’s Chest Wound
Even though T’Challa comes out as the winner of his fight against M’Baku for the throne, M’Baku put up a good fight. There were moments when M’Baku almost defeated T’Challa, including a move where he stabs him in the chest with a spear. Although there is blood surrounding his wound in the following shots, there isn’t nearly enough blood as there should be for a wound that severe.
Granted, with a PG-13 rating there can only be so much blood, but even after the fight is over the blood isn’t dripping down onto his stomach. The filmmakers could have opted to not have the blood drip down so that it wouldn’t block Chadwick Boseman’s abs, or it could just be another mistake.
9 Shuri’s Middle Finger
One of the funnier elements of Black Panther are the interactions between T’Challa and his younger sister Shuri. When T’Challa arrives at Wakanda towards the beginning of the movie, he is welcomed home by his mother and sister. When Shuri talks with T’Challa, she explains that she only came to welcome him home so that she could get the EMP beads since she created an update for them.
T’Challa makes a joke about her making an update to her ceremonial outfit, which causes Shuri to flip T’Challa off as she walks away. It’s a humorous scene, but Shuri’s arm is at a 90 degree angle in one shot and then in the next shot, her arm is way up in the air.
8 The Black Panther Necklace
After the intense battle between T’Challa and Killmonger takes place, Killmonger throws T’Challa from the waterfall. With Killmonger being the obvious winner, he must be crowned the new King of Wakanda by receiving the ceremonial necklace. T’Challa’s mother shakes as she pulls out the necklace, which has a metal clasp on the back with little room for extra beads.
In the next shot, when Ramonda puts the necklace over Killmonger’s head and makes him the King of Wakanda, the necklace now has a rope backing with much more room for other beads. The necklace was likely updated between the days of shooting, but it leaves a small continuity error that many people probably missed.
7 Ross’ Windows
CIA and government vehicles often have tinted windows. In Black Panther, Everett Ross’ is frequently shown driving an SUV with said windows. In the car chase that takes place after the Casino scene, T’Challa, Nakia, and Okoye are chasing after Klaue. After Nakia and Okoye’s vehicle is destroyed, Ross shows up in his SUV with tinted windows and tells them to get in.
Even though Ross is clearly driving the same car during the scene, his windows and windshield go from being tinted to untinted throughout the shots. Also, it doesn’t just happen once, but several times throughout the conclusion of the scene when Klaue is captured. Having the windows untinted in certain shots didn’t really add anything to the scene, so it’s as big of a mystery as it is a mistake.
6 T’Challa’s Beard
One of the earliest continuity errors happens with the first scene of T’Challa. At the very beginning of the movie, T’Challa and Okoye are aboard a ship and are about to aid Nakia with her mission. Before T’Challa is dropped from the ship, he converses with Okoye about him freezing when he sees Nakia for the first time.
Between the different shots, T’Challa’s beard changes length. In one shot, it appears very short, while it appears to be a bit longer in other shots. The likely explanation is that the actor had to return for reshoots to add in extra dialogue, but they forgot to check the length of his beard. It isn’t a huge mistake, but it’s interesting to see what scenes they had to go back and reshoot.
5 The Inclusion Of The Wales Flag
Towards the end of the movie, T’Challa visits the United Nations with Okoye and Nakia. During the scene, T’Challa explains that Wakanda will no longer stand on the sidelines, but will now aid other countries in their time of need by sharing their knowledge and technology with others. While the scene seems fairly straight-forward and was hinted at for the majority of the film, there is a mistake within the scene.
During one of the wide shots, the Wales flag can be seen among the other flags of the United Nations. That being said, since Wales is a part of the United Kingdom, the Wales flag shouldn’t have been included in the shot.
4 Black Panther’s Silent Shoes
Black Panther has many unique weapons and equipment at his disposal. His sister Shuri helps develop and advance the equipment. During the scene where Shuri is showing off her work to her brother and giving him his updated suit, she equips him with shoes that are supposed to be silent. Even though the shoes are supposed to be silent, there are several scenes throughout the movie when the sound department still added in footsteps when T’Challa was running.
While the sound team was probably just used to adding in footsteps, they clearly forgot they didn’t need to for Black Panther. One of the most prevalent examples of this is when T’Challa runs up a ramp later on in the film and his footsteps can clearly be heard.
3 Hanuman The Monkey God's Origins
Early on in the movie, T’Challa is about to be crowned the new King of Wakanda, but first other Wakandans are given the chance to challenge T’Challa through combat. M’Baku from the Jabari Tribe decides to fight T’Challa, since he is doesn’t think T’Challa is worthy and he wasn’t able to save T’Chaka. Before the battle begins, M’Baku utters the line, “Glory to Hanuman.”
The movie never explains who Hanuman is, but is one of the main characters in the epic Ramayana. The god dresses as a monkey and is supposed to symbolize inner self-control and faith. The only problem is that the Monkey God didn’t originate in Africa, but in India. It’s possible M’Baku would worship a god from India, but it seems unlikely.
2 T’Challa’s Moving Hands
Near the beginning of the movie, T’Challa and W’Kabi are called to a meeting to discuss Ulysses Klaue’s plan to sell the Vibranium artifact he stole from the museum in London. At the very beginning of the scene, T’Challa’s hands are clearly seen to be sitting on his lap, but in the very next shot, his hands are placed on the arms of his chair.
His arms remain their for the rest of the scene, but his hands initially being on his lap must have slipped past the editors. Even though it is a minuscule mistake in an otherwise great scene, it is still a continuity error that many fans might not catch.
1 M'Baku's Necklace
One of the biggest scenes in Black Panther was when M'Baku challenges T'Challa for the throne of Wakanda. Both actors Chadwick Boseman and Winston Duke wear apparel from Africa to make the scene seem authentic. Both wear ritual masks, body paint, and M'Baku is also wearing a necklace.
When M'Baku turns to the crowd to criticize Shuri for leading Wakanda's technology division, the pieces on his necklace are turned up. Then when he turns back around and faces T'Challa, the pieces on his necklace are then facing down. The following ritual combat scene may be quite the spectacle, but it isn't without its own tiny mistakes. That being said, many fans probably didn't catch this small mistake at all.
