Benedict Cumberbatch Regrets Not Witnessing Infinity War Fan Reactions

Not seeing fan reactions to Avengers: Infinity War during their first screening is something that Benedict Cumberbatch regrets. Marvel Studios rolled out their 19th MCU installment this past April, effectively beginning the culmination of the 22-film arc that they've been unfolding for a decade now. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the movie saw Earth's Mightiest Heroes gallantly fight Thanos, with help from some new allies such as Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange.

Prior to the events of Infinity War, the Sorcerer Supreme had been largely operating independently, silently protecting reality against potential mystical threats. But the sudden arrival of the Mad Titan forced him to join forces with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in an attempt to prevent the villain's catastrophic plans. Unfortunately, despite giving it their all, Thanos emerged the victor - successfully wiping out half of life in the universe. That twist remains a favorite topic of conversation among fans up even now, and Cumberbatch says he wishes he was able to see audiences' response upon seeing it play out on the big screen.

Speaking with UPROXX while promoting his animated film The Grinch, Cumberbatch talked about his experience being part of Infinity War as Doctor Strange. While he's thrilled to have been part of such a massive project, there's one thing that he regrets in connection to the film - not witnessing fans react to seeing it on the big screen.

This is my biggest regret of that whole time is that I didn’t sneak in to see people’s reaction. And I wish I had. I really do. I really wish I’d done that. And I think it was such a long press tour, by the time my family got me home I was well and truly on holiday and with them. Or was I working? Geez, I can’t even remember anymore. I think I had a tiny break and then I was riding into doing a TV drama about Brexit. But yeah, it’s my biggest regret of that whole experience. And there aren’t that many regrets, because it was a wild ride. I mean, just selling that movie by not being able to say anything. But the places we got to go - and it was very cool. I know other people who did it. I think Tom Holland did it. I know Mark Ruffalo took his children, because he then FaceTimed us from the cinema.

One of the unfortunate heroes effected by Thanos' deadly snap, Strange's current whereabouts and situation are unknown. While the half of the universe that was snuffed out of existence is believed to be dead, it's expected that the remaining heroes will find a way to restore the old status quo of the galaxy. Cumberbatch has so far been a master of dodging spoiler questions about Avengers 4, but considering how Strange is the only one who knows how the Mad Titan's eventual defeat will play out - not to mention that Doctor Strange 2 is confirmed to be moving forward - it's safe to say that fans wills see him in next year's ensemble film one way or another.

With the promise that Avengers 4 will be more surprising than Avengers: Infinity War, Cumberbatch can hopefully experience the thrill of seeing people react to Marvel's Phase 3 capper next year. So far, not much is known regarding the film, as Marvel Studios remains tight-lipped about it - so much so that it still doesn't have an official subtitle six months before it hits theaters. However, fans will be thrilled to know that official promotional activities for the flick are expected to begin sometime this month, with the release of its highly anticipated first trailer.
