Captain Marvel Prequel Comic Doesn't Start Where You Think

The first dose of Marvel's Captain Marvel Prelude comic has arrived, beginning what the comic book publisher describes as a story starring both Nick Fury and Maria Hill which "leads directly to the appearance of Captain Marvel." But that's a more interesting tease than it originally seemed.

We have the preview of the first pages of the Captain Marvel Prelude, but it won't be the tease of Brie Larson's version of Carol Danvers that fans will be meeting. Keeping with the assumption that the movie would be retconning the MCU, and revealing that Captain Marvel made The Avengers possible as Nick Fury's pet project, the comic isn't picking up where Infinity War left off. To tell the story of Carol Danvers, you apparently need to go all the way back to Avengers: Age of Ultron, at the latest.

That's judging by the opening of the Captain Marvel Prelude, a comic that, if it's anything like the others released by Marvel Comics, catches fans up on what they need to know before a solo movie arrives. So it's more than a little curious that the action in Issue #1 picks up in the heat of the Avengers' battle against Ultron. Specifically, as Nick Fury returned to the fight with a Helicarrier beneath him, and Maria Hill beside him. Where the comic heads from there is anyone's guess, but the suggestion seems to be that whatever sequence of events led Nick Fury to page Captain Marvel in the Infinity War post-credits scene included the Age of Ultron somewhere along the line.

At first glance, MCU fans will be disappointed to see that a comic advertised as a "prelude" to the coming Captain Marvel movie travels backwards in time, reshashing the events of a movie that has nothing to do with Carol Danvers. At least... that's how it seems. That may be true, and Marvel's Captain Marvel Prelude may only attempt to fill newcomers in on the state of the MCU. But with the teases offered up for the first issue alone, it sounds like the rest of the story will be jumping forward to a post-Infinity War setting. Which begs the question: what story is actually starting in these pages? Did Age of Ultron convince Nick Fury that his Avengers weren't as reliable as he once hoped? Did he reach out to Captain Marvel prior to even Civil War as a result?
