Godzilla 2 Images Tease New Monsters Ghidorah, Mothra, & Rodan

New images for Godzilla 2 tease the franchise's new monsters, particularly Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra, all of whom will be introduced in 2019's King of the Monsters movie. It's been several years since the Gareth Edwards' first Godzilla movies hit theaters and kickstarted Warner Bros.' MonsterVerse. And now, two years after Jordan Vogt-Roberts expanded the studio's shared universe with Kong: Skull Island, director Michael Dougherty is taking the franchise to new levels with Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Although not a whole lot is known about Godzilla: King of the Monsters, WB's viral site, Monarch Sciences, has provided a great deal of background information for the three new monsters, including their history on the planet, their power levels, and where they are currently located. It's clear that the in-universe organization Monarch has been studying them for a long time, which begs the question: when did Monarch first become aware of all these different monsters?

WB showcased a batch of new images from the Monarch Sciences website (though the photos still haven't been uploaded to the site as of yet) at Los Angeles Comic Con last month, which tease sightings of the new monsters. Fans can see Mothra's god rays, Rodan turning the night sky red, and Ghidorah's hyper hurricane (something that ties into Ghidorah's atmosphere-breaking powers). Even Godzilla himself is shown swimming towards the California coast for San Diego Comic-Con 2018, which is where the first Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer was unveiled. While it's certainly interesting seeing Monarch's first sightings of these monsters, it's not the only bit of information that can be extrapolated from the new images. In the top left-hand corner of each "sighting" is the name of the person who documented the incident. Interestingly, those people are all Monarch scientists, namely Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins), who will be returning in the sequel. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will also introduce new scientist Dr. Chen, who's played by Zhang Ziyi. But perhaps the most interesting name here is Brooks. That name most likely refers to Houston Brooks from Kong: Skull Island, which means he's at least partly responsible for discovering Mothra in addition to Kong.

Considering that Godzilla: King of the Monsters doesn't release in theaters for several more months, there's plenty of time for WB to continue to showcase the new monsters, providing little bits of information at a time. For now, these images are merely teases to keep fans interested in the marketing campaign, while also potentially setting up what might become an alternate reality game (ARG) that Bad Robot's Cloverfield movie franchise is well-known for doing.
