A new casting announcement for the Veronica Mars TV show revival includes Clifton Collins Jr. of Westworld fame. The neo-noir mystery drama aired on UPN and The CW in the early 2000s for three seasons before it was canceled. Following the eponymous teenage sleuth played by Kristen Bell, the series featured weekly cases as well as season-wide arcs, often focusing on the disparity between the wealthy citizens of seaside Neptune, California and its lower-income residents.
When Veronica Mars was unceremoniously canceled in 2007, many fans requested a continuation in some form. Creator Rob Thomas soon became busy with subsequent series such as CW revival 90210, short-lived Starz comedy Party Down, and current hit iZombie. At the same time, Bell's film career was taking off. But they were able to get at least some of the old gang back together with the help of a Kickstarter campaign which led to the 2014 Veronica Mars film. This revitalized energy in the world led to an interest in bringing back the show for a limited series, which was picked up by Hulu this year.

In the latest casting announcement, two new characters have joined the universe. As reported by Deadline, Collins Jr. will play Alonzo, a hitman for a Mexican cartel. Alonzo has traveled to California because of his boss' connection with a missing teenager, and he's been ordered to take down the person or persons responsible. It also sounds like he'll find a love interest. Collins Jr. currently stars as Lawrence, aka El Lazo, a criminal host on Westworld. He was nominated for an Emmy years ago for his supporting role in the FX miniseries Thief.
Another new character is Matty Ross, a teenage girl who reminds Veronica a bit of her young, rebellious self. Matty will be played by Izabela Vidovic, who played a young Kara in Supergirl during two episodes last season. Vidovic has also had recurring roles on the shows About a Boy and The Fosters and, most recently, an arc on Thomas' iZombie.
This is just the latest in a series of casting announcements for the highly anticipated revival. It's been confirmed that, along with Bell, a number of actors from the original series will return, including Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas), Jason Dohring (Logan Echolls), Francis Capra (Eli "Weevil" Navarro), and Percy Daggs III (Wallace Fennel). Bell also shared an image on Instagram recently featuring none other than Enrico Colantoni, who played her father, Keith Mars, on the series, so it looks like he'll also be in the mix. Since the revival won't be premiering until Summer 2019, chances are there will be plenty more announcements to come.
