The final season of the unconventional FXX romantic comedy You're the Worst will premiere in January 2019. The show takes a look at modern life, happiness, and relationships through its four leads: Jimmy (Christopher Geere), Gretchen (Aya Cash), Edgar (Desmin Borges), and Lindsay (Kether Donohue). Unlike most TV shows though, these characters don't try to be likable. In fact, sometimes their actions are downright reprehensible, making them all the more fun to watch.
Through its first four seasons, You're the Worst went from an a underdog comedy to a well respected critical darling (despite its season four stumble). While on the outside the series appears to be about the messy relationship between Jimmy and Gretchen, the show also tackles serious issues such as Edgar's PTSD and status as a veteran and how Gretchen's clinical depression affects her relationships. The show's situations, both hilarious and serious, are anchored by the standout core cast members, who ground the series and uplift it with their humor.

According to Deadline season 5 of You're the Worst will premiere January 9 on FXX. (The show moved from FX to FXX after season 1.) The decision to end the show after season 5 was mutual according to the show's creator Stephen Falk. The network also released the first look at the last season. The trailer shows Gretchen decked out in a wedding dress looking in the mirror and proclaiming that she "feels nothing." It's good to see that despite their (potential) pending nuptials these characters still haven't changed. The trailer also gives glimpses at Lindsay punching Gretchen, some tears and screaming, and all the crass humor fans have come to expect from the show. Check out the trailer below.
Fans know when it comes to You're the Worst not to expect the typical fairytale ending, even with all the trailer's hints of wedding bells. Part of the reason the show works so well is the way it shows love in all its messy, difficult reality. Gretchen and Jimmy have never been a typical couple. And their will-they or won't-they wedding shouldn't be any different.
During a TCA event in August, Falk said the show's final episode will deal with commitment and what it means. He also promised that the season premiere will be an homage to 1990s rom coms, particularly the Julia Roberts vehicle Notting Hill. There will also be one last "Sunday Funday," the group's beloved tradition, that comes with its own song - much to the chagrin of Jimmy.
