Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Trailer Goes 930 Years Into The Future

The first teaser trailer for season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery debuted at New York Comic Con and teases the show's 930 year time jump. Launching in 2017, Star Trek: Discovery became the first new series in this franchise since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005. Through two seasons, the CBS All Access exclusive series has put the spotlight on Commander Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Green.

Up until this point, Star Trek: Discovery has served as a prequel to prior Star Trek shows, but that will all change in season 3. The second season dealt with the Discovery crew - led by Captain Christopher Pike - attempting to stop Control from wiping out all life in the galaxy. It took the crew all season to complete this mission, as it took some drastic measures to do this. Burnham had to become the second time-traveling Red Angel in order to remove the information Control was after from the 23rd century. As a result, the season 2 finale teased that Burnham has found herself 930 years in the future - and now the first trailer for season 3 offers a glimpse at this future.

Following Star Trek: Discovery's presence at NYCC, a brief one-minute teaser trailer was released online for all fans to see. The trailer primarily focuses on Burnham exploring life in the 32nd century. But, the trailer also features glimpses of Acting Captain Commander Saru (Doug Jones) and other returning cast members.

After starting out with Burnham's apparent crash landing, she mentions that she's already been searching for answers for a year. Throughout the rest of the trailer, she is paired up with Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala), who will make his Star Trek: Discovery debut in the season 3 premiere. Clearly, the state of Starfleet is not great in this future though, as he refers to their symbol as a "ghost." Likewise, it appears The Federation has seen better days, as their symbol now only holds six stars.

Beyond what new information can be gathered in the trailer, there is currently no additional details on when fans will get to see more. All that has been confirmed is that Star Trek: Discovery season 3 returns to CBS All Access sometime in 2020. With the first season of Star Trek: Picard confirmed for a January 2020 release, it is expected that Star Trek: Discovery will not return until after Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) next adventure has concluded. As a result, fans may have to wait until late spring or early summer to catch the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 3.
