Star Wars 9: Dark Rey Art Highlights Her Double-Bladed Lightsaber

New artwork for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker highlights Rey's Dark Jedi look and sees her sporting a double-bladed red lightsaber. Long-time fans of the series are sure to note the last time a red double-bladed lightsaber was seen up close in a main-line theatrical Star Wars release was all the way back in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, largely considered to be one of the least enjoyable films in the entire series.

Although The Phantom Menace was disliked heavily by fans thanks to its focus on a child version of Anakin Skywalker and the inclusion of purported comic relief characters like Jar Jar Binks, one thing (besides podracing) which fans appreciated about the first episode in the Skywalker saga was Darth Maul, apprentice to Lord Sidious, who defeated Qui-Gon Jinn in battle during the orchestral swells of Duel of the Fates and was then in turn cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Although Maul has reappeared after-the-fact in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television show as well as the spin-off film Solo: A Star Wars story, neither he nor his iconic lightsaber have shown up in the franchise's main films since.

While it's unlikely Rey has turned so far to the dark side that she becomes Darth Maul's new apprentice, trailers and promotional stills have shown her wielding a double-bladed red lightsaber not dissimilar to the one sported by the horned Sith lord. Embedded below is new artwork from Empire magazine which shows off Rey's Dark Jedi look, as well as the iconic double-bladed saber fans of Jedi: Fallen Order have been excitedly searching for.

As The Rise of Skywalker's release date of December 20th looms ever closer, fans are getting more and more small details about the film's plot ahead of it's theatrical unveiling. Another detailed look was recently provided which showcased the many different uniforms for the Knights of Ren, and although J.J. Abrams has stated the origin of Rey's powers is supposed to be an unsolvable mystery many fans are looking forward to finding out whether or not Kylo Ren was telling the truth about her parents.

Answers to these questions, as well as Leia's ultimate fate, what's going on with C-3P0, and why is Rey holding a red lightsaber in the first place will all have to wait just a little less than a month more. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is sure to be one of the most watched films of the year when it releases next month, if not the decade, and fans tuning in to see the conclusion of the Skywalker saga hopefully will not be disappointed. Maybe, just maybe, Maul will show up after all.
