The Simpsons First Thanksgiving Of Horror Special Coming Sunday

The Simpsons will be airing their first-ever Thanksgiving of Horror special this Sunday. Since its early days as an edgy animated series, The Simpsons have kept up the annual tradition of broadcasting a Halloween episode called Treehouse of Horror. For some, the concept is one of the best things about The Simpsons. In addition to the short and twisted subject matter the best Treehouse of Horror episodes offer, they also often parody popular or classic horror films in the very specific way only The Simpsons can.

This year, for example, the series entered its 31st season, and although 2019 will forever be noted as the year The Simpsons officially became part of the Disney+ family, the series continues to offer the same degree of irreverent humor which has made it into the huge success it is. Perhaps to celebrate its enduring popularity, or perhaps as a means of drawing in potentially huge viewership numbers, The Simpsons will try something new this year during the upcoming American Thanksgiving holiday.

According to a new teaser from Fox Animation’s official YouTube channel, this year will mark the first time The Simpsons will take their successful Treehouse of Horror formula and apply it to a Thanksgiving episode. The aptly-titled Thanksgiving of Horror episode will air Sunday, November 24, and, as the teaser makes abundantly clear, there’s going to be a lot of turkey-related humor on display. Interested viewers can check out the trailer, which is embedded below.

It might seem strange to give a horror theme to a Thanksgiving episode, but this is The Simpsons, after all. The iconic animated series has literally made a name for itself over the years by doing exactly what isn’t expected of it. As it so happens, creating horror stories which revolve around turkeys and man-eating leftovers isn’t typical holiday fare, meaning it will likely draw in a healthy amount of viewers. There has been a lot of talk recently about The Simpsons as a result of their move to Disney+, and although the act has prompted complains that Disney altered aspect ratios in some of the older episodes, everything so far has gone quite smoothly. The move also brought more talk of a sequel to 2007’s The Simpsons Movie, and despite not committing to an exact date, the show’s creators have assured fans a Simpsons Movie 2 is still very likely.

For some fans of The Simpsons, the Treehouse of Horror episodes aren’t the highlight moments others find them to be. Unfortunately for these fans, they will now have to endure a second horror-themed holiday special this year, the likes of which have a very good chance of becoming a new annual staple for the series. The bright side to this is horror stories about food seem like a naturally funny concept – particularly for The Simpsons. It may feel like the wrong time of year for spooky stories, but these particular spooky stories are sure to be like nothing fans have seen before.
