We all know that Star Wars is one of the best and biggest franchises of all time, telling many simple stories in many fantastic films. The battle of good and evil, and the themes of friendship, family, and love are prevalent throughout, conveyed through fantastic and iconic characters and brilliant narratives.
The nature of the franchise is bound to lead to romances with its characters and, through the films and other media, that has been provided in abundance. Some of these romances are beautiful and some even iconic. However, some are quite truly awful and a complete mistake. Here are 5 Star Wars couples that are perfect together, and 5 that make no sense.
RISE OF SKYWALKER SPOILERS AHEAD!
10 NO SENSE - PALPATINE & ???
In The Rise Of Skywalker, fans are given the answer to a long-asked question: who is Rey? Turns out Rey is a Palpatine as he is her grandfather. We see that Rey's parents leave her on Jakku and are killed for doing so, with Rey's father being Palpatine's son.
What makes no sense about Palpatine's relationship with whomever he conceived Rey with is the timeline. Rey is around 20 at the time of Rise Of Skywalker, meaning she was born in 15 ABY. Rey's father in the film looks in his late 20s with the actor being 30 in real life. This would mean Palpatine had a relationship in the height of his powers creating the Death Star, ruling the republic, and building the Empire at around 15 BBY, all while looking that young. Palpatine could have created his son with the Force but given the information, we know this is highly unlikely.
9 PERFECT - BAIL & BREHA ORGANA
Breha and Bail Organa were Queen and Senator of Alderaan throughout the Clone Wars and the early stages of the Galactic Civil War. The pair were married through all of this and when Padmé passed, the two secretly adopted Leia.
Not only were the pair, especially Bail, an early foundation and creator of the Rebel Alliance, but the two also took a massive risk and adopted the child of Anakin and raised her into a strong, inspirational Princess-turned-General. The two were great parents and their marriage survived some dark times up until their death, making the pair is pretty perfect for one another.
8 NO SENSE - ANAKIN & PADMÉ
Anakin and Padmé are perhaps the most important romance in Star Wars. If not for them there would be no Luke nor Leia, perhaps no Vader, and no clear way to defeat the Empire.
Unfortunately though, the cringe-inducing dialogue, lack of chemistry, and near unlikability of the pair in The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones makes their relationship feel forced and unnatural. Even prequel lovers have a hard time believing the pair truly have feelings for each other; this is improved in The Clone Wars and other media, but not saved.
7 BEST - KYLO & REY
One of the highlights of Disney's sequel trilogy has been the relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey. The two have fantastic chemistry and their time spent on-screen together is among the highlights of each film. It is no surprise then that fan theories and fictions have the two paired romantically as "Reylo."
This romance came to fruition in The Rise Of Skywalker in the form of a kiss and while the two did not get to spend time together as an official couple, it is clear they are both perfect for each other. They are drawn to one another with a strong connection, and the potential for their romance is as big as it is impossible with Ben's death.
6 NO SENSE - JAR JAR & JULIA
In a pair of Clone Wars episodes titled "The Disappeared Part 1 & 2," fans are introduced to Queen Julia of Bardotta. The Queen is abducted within these episodes and after being saved, shares a kiss with the infamous Jar Jar Binks.
The fleeting romance is about as awkward and uninteresting as one can imagine. The episodes hold some good stuff, but this romance is not one of them and it is also never spoken of in Star Wars again. The nonsensical nature of it comes in how short it is, how it is never mentioned again, and why the creators felt the need to force it in.
5 PERFECT - OBI-WAN & SATINE KRYZE
A much better romance to come out of The Clone Wars. The series reveals that Obi-Wan himself had his romantic connection with Duchess Satine Kryze, leader of Mandalore. The pair met when Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were tasked with protecting her, and the two developed feelings for one another. Obi-Wan's commitment to the Order meant the two separated and were heartbroken. He admitted later had she asked him to stay, he would have left the Order.
This relationship is heartbreaking. It highlights the issues with the Jedi Order and gives the beloved Obi-Wan more layers for fans to adore. The two had an obvious connection and deserved to be together and when Satine is killed, it is one of The Clone Wars' most emotional moments, thanks to Obi-Wan.
4 NO SENSE - FINN & ROSE
The blame for this relationship does not fall on the performers, but rather the writing of both The Last Jedi and The Rise Of Skywalker. As great as Kelly Marie Tran is, Rose, does not click into the story, especially not romantically. This is due to the fact the sub-story of going to find the codebreaker on Canto Bight is ultimately pointless and serves to further Finn's arc.
When Finn and Rose kiss, and the cringeworthy one of love and hate is delivered, it is weak and unsatisfying and honestly kind of awkward. But to make matters worse in The Rise Of Skywalker Rose is virtually non-existent and fans get no closure on her character or her and Finn's story.
3 PERFECT - KANAN JARRUS & HERA SYNDULLA
It is clear throughout the whole of Rebels that Kanan and Hera have feelings for one another. When they finally admit it and the payoff happens, it is immensely satisfying.
The two are leaders and parents to the "Ghost," crew who consistently see themselves as a family, and that is epitomized in this pair's relationship. They are two of the show's best characters and when Kanan dies, it makes the moment all the more emotional seeing Hera's reaction. The two loved each other and it showed.
2 NO SENSE - LUKE AND LEIA
It is evident that in A New Hope and the first part of The Empire Strikes Back that Luke has a crush on Leia and when she kisses him to annoy Han in Empire, Luke is visibly jubilant.
The only issue with this is that the two — as we all know — are brother and sister. In all fairness, the characters do not know this information at the time, but when Leia claims she has always known she and Luke were related, it is a bit worrying. Ultimately this romance makes no sense.
1 PERFECT - HAN & LEIA
Who else? The most iconic romantic pair the franchise has to offer, Han and Leia flirt and argue and fight, leading to the iconic Empire Strikes Back moment of "I love you," "I know," and the vice versa of that which appears in Return Of The Jedi.
The fact that the two separate between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens is heartbreaking but the film also shows that the two still love each other. Their chemistry and dynamic is brilliant, and they truly belonged with one another, and are undoubtedly the best romance in Star Wars as well as the most iconic.
