Star Wars 9 Theory: Why Rey Returns To Ahch-To In Rise Of Skywalker

Rey returns to the island of Ahch-To in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and there are a few possible explanations as to why. The stakes have never been higher than in the last installment of the Skywalker Saga as the Resistance and the First Order go head to head in the final battle for supremacy. Amidst the looming shadows of troubled pasts and fragile hopes set for the future, Rey must not only hone her skills to become a true Jedi but also discover the truth behind her lineage.

Rey possesses a staggering amount of potential, but the core of her story arc and the missing piece to the puzzle so to speak is who her parents are and, perhaps more pertinently now, where she comes from. During a recent Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker TV spot, Rey is shown standing on Ahch-To, once in a hooded close-up and another before the flaming wreckage of Kylo Ren's ship. The planet holds great significance for her as this is where she found Luke Skywalker and began her training in Stars Wars: The Last Jedi. It's also where she experiences the crushing disappointment of only viewing her reflection in the cavern when she requests to see her parents, so it shouldn't be too surprising she has returned.

Maybe there are still some clues left to be discovered on Ahch-To. There is still more of Rey's past to be explored, even without retconning Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It remains possible that Kylo Ren lied about her parents being junk traders who abandoned her, or at least it's more complicated than that. Perhaps Ahch-To, and a reunion with Kylo there, could bring some answers. Furthermore, with Rey's Sith dagger and she and Kylo destroying Darth Vader's helmet, it might instead be another object strong in the Force that draws them both to Ahch-To, with their Force connection allowing one to follow the other.

There's also the possibility that Rey is returning to Ahch-To just as Luke returned to Dagobah after training with Yoda in Star Wars: Return of The Jedi. Yoda died on Dagobah and passed into the Force, and the same is be true for Luke and Ahch-To. The island has a strong presence of the Force dwelling there, and is where the first Jedi temple was built. The Force could be reaching out to Rey and guiding her to Ahch-To, where she would be reunited with Luke, who is presumably now a Force Ghost. He could continue to train Rey in the Jedi ways and further guide her on her path, leading to the final battle with Emperor Palpatine.

Ahch-To is a location full of intrigue, so it's certainly no bad thing that Rey is returning in Star Wars 9. Whether it's because of Kylo, Luke, a combination of the two or something else entirely, it's for now another piece of the puzzle housed with J.J. Abrams' mystery box, ready to be put together in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and help bring the Skywalker Saga to a satisfying end.
