Long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother was a hit show because it filled in the void that Friends left behind. The reason it lasted as long as it did was the characters. Each member of the gang was relatable in so many ways, especially protagonist Ted Mosby.
HIMYM taught us that love doesn’t just pertain to romance. It’s also about the love for family, friends, and most importantly, ourselves. Ted’s monologues to his kids, along with his interactions with the other beloved characters, made for some fantastic quotes many of us can reflect upon.
10 “Everyone has an opinion on how long it takes to recover from a breakup.”
Break-ups take an emotional toll and you never really know how to deal with them. Many people will go through at least one break-up in their lives. You end up getting friends and family telling you how to cope or how long it will take to get over it.
The truth is, no one knows that answer because there isn’t one. There is no definitive science or process to get over someone, despite what many will tell you. At the end of the day, it’s up to you to figure that out on your own terms.
9 “You can’t cling to the past. Because no matter how tightly you hold on, it’s already gone."
We’ve all done it. We’ve let our past heartbreaks dictate our present and future loves. All of the characters were guilty of this in one way or another, especially Robin. This quote lets us know that the past is no longer relevant since time has already passed.
We can’t keep holding onto something that no longer exists. As long as we keep clinging to the past, it’s going to affect what we do later on in life, especially in our relationships. All of the characters went on journeys that allowed them to forget the past and just look forward.
8 "Kids, when you're in a new relationship and you're competing with your ex for who's happier, it can get ugly."
Love should never be a competition, especially with your ex of all people. One of the hardest things to do emotionally is to let go of an ex. Sometimes you start dating someone else solely to help you get over that other person. That's fine in some aspects but you should never try to use it as a competition for your ex.
As Ted and Robin would discover, it only makes matters worse. If you compete with your ex on who's in a better relationship, it just ends badly for all parties. It ends up hurting the new relationship and that person involved, who ultimately nothing wrong..
7 “Everyone comes with baggage. Find someone who loves you enough to help you unpack."
As the quote suggests, everyone has some sort of baggage in their life. No matter what that is, just know you’re not the only one. Ted’s baggage was being left at the altar by Stella. It also didn’t help that The Wedding Bride movie forced him to relive it.
Still, you should never let the baggage define you. Better yet, you want to find someone who’s willing to look past it and help you pick up that heavy suitcase. At the same time, you want to carry theirs as well so it all balances out.
6 “People don’t get the chance to discover each other anymore.”
This episode is just as relevant now, if not more than it was in 2011. With everyone on social media and the internet, it’s so easy to create your own assumptions about someone based on their digital life. Ted had the right idea of going on a date with a girl and not doing any online research beforehand.
Unfortunately, Robin and Barney weren’t going to let that slide and told Ted all there was to know about her. This can totally ruin the first impression since you have this false idea of someone before you even get a chance to know them.
5 "You may think your only choices are to swallow your anger..."
"You may think your only choices are to swallow your anger or throw it in someone's face, but there's a third option: You can just let it go, and only when you do that is it really gone and you can move forward."
If you've been terribly heartbroken, it's totally understandable that you'd want to speak your mind to the person who did it. What Stella did to Ted was just awful and it would stay with him for years.
As Ted teaches us in this quote, though, you should actually just let it go. If you tell off the person who hurt you, what would it actually accomplish? You'd still be heartbroken at the end of the day. It's best to move forward with your life instead. You can't change the past, so just move on with the future.
4 “If you’re looking for the word that means caring about someone beyond all rationality...”
“If you’re looking for the word that means caring about someone beyond all rationality and wanting them to have everything they want, no matter how much it destroys you, it's love.”
This one hits hard for Ted but it was finally time he said it. Even days before Robin’s wedding, he admits that he still loves her and wants nothing more than to make sure she’s happy, even if it means he doesn’t get to be with her.
When you love someone, you want to give them the world because you think they deserve it. The reality of life is that not everyone is going to feel the same way you feel about them. But that doesn’t mean that you still shouldn’t care about them and try to make them happy. You’re still a good and caring person at the end of the day.
3 “Love is totally nonsensical...”
“Love is totally nonsensical. But we have to keep doing it or else we’re lost and love is dead, and humanity should just pack it in. Because love is the best thing we do.”
“Love” is used in so many stories, yet no one can actually define what love is, and that shouldn’t matter. As Ted puts it, love is the best thing we do and we should never stop. Whether it's for family, friends, or romantic partners, you should always find love for someone.
Much like Ted, you can’t always put into words how you feel about someone. You just do. For years, Ted was head-over-heels for Robin, even if it didn’t make sense.
2 “Shouldn’t we hold out for the person who doesn’t just tolerate our little quirks but actually kinda likes them?”
Ted was always finding the wrong woman. He would sometimes change up his personality to please them. The thing is, that doesn’t work in the long run. You should never change who you for someone else.
Ted and Tracy were perfect for each other since they appreciated each other’s quirks and weirdness. Never change who you are. You want to find someone who likes you for you. Ted eventually did.
1 “You will be shocked, kids, when you discover how easy it is in life to part ways with people forever..."
“You will be shocked, kids, when you discover how easy it is in life to part ways with people forever. That’s why, when you find someone you want to keep around, you do something about it."
This is what HIMYM was all about. The people you try to keep around are the ones who were worth it. Just like the show, you will come across so many different people and sadly, may never see many again.
It’s so easy to drift apart the older you get. The friends you had when you were younger will eventually go their separate ways. That’s just how time works. Due to this, the ones you stick with are the ones who mean the most to your life. It may not be romance but Ted loved each of his four best friends just as much as he loved Tracy.
