WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sex Education.
Aside from the big question regarding Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve's (Emma Mackey) future, Sex Education season 2 left a handful of lingering queries unanswered. From questions about the future of the school sex therapy to the surprising revelation about Jean Milburn's (Gillian Anderson) pregnancy, there was a lot to unpack at the end of Sex Education season 2.
Debuting in 2019, Sex Education season 1 proved to be a hit with over 40 million viewers. So when the series returned for additional eight episodes centering on the lead characters of the narrative, Maeve and Otis, it also shined a light on other key players, thus making season 2 a well-rounded story. There were a lot of moving pieces in Sex Education season 2 as the show attempted to tackle pressing issues with regards to high school love, gender, and intimacy issues.
For the most part, Sex Education season 2 did a brilliant job doing a balancing act when it came to all of its subplots, but due to the sheer number of storylines simultaneously happening, it's expected that Sex Education season 2 leaves a lot of lingering questions unresolved. These are the biggest questions we have leading to Sex Education season 3.
During the winding moments of Sex Education season 2, Otis comes to talk to Maeve about his feelings for her. However, by the time he gets to her trailer, she's just left. Instead of waiting for her to return, Otis asked Isaac (George Robinson) to tell her that he dropped by, and emphasized to check her voicemail where he left a sweet message professing his love. Despite Isaac assuring him that he'll do just that, he went behind both of their backs, listened to the said message, and deleted it right after. The fallout of Isaac's betrayal will be central to Sex Education's season 3 story and it's curious how Maeve will discover his ruse, as well as Otis' heartfelt voice message.
In conjunction with Maeve learning about Otis' message, it's curious if Sex Education will finally make them an official couple in season 3. The first two years of the show have toyed with the possibility of them coming together, but things just haven't work out in their favor. With their mutual attraction now out in the open, what are the chances that we'll finally get to see them as a couple the next time the show returns? It's the classic case of will-they/won't-they, and at this point, considering everything they've been through, it's probably high time to give the viewers the satisfying pay off of seeing them together.
The Milburns had complicated love lives in Sex Education season 2. Aside from Otis getting caught in the middle of love triangle with Ola (Patricia Allison) and Maeve, his mom, Jean (Gillian Anderson), started and ended a relationship with Jakob (Mikael Persbrandt). Sadly, no one is immune to making relationship mistakes as Jean briefly cheated on her new lover with her ex-husband. This turned off Jakob, and despite Jean wanting to rekindle their romance, he just couldn't risk the possibility of being cheated on again. Things get really dicey when Jean discovers that she's pregnant with his baby. She hasn't told him yet of the situation, and there's no guarantee that he'll take her back just because she's expecting, so the possibility of her terminating it is not outside the realm of plausibility.
Headmaster Groff's (Alistair Petrie) attempt to project a fake image of Moordale forced him to make some grave wrongdoings, including vindictively publishing Jean's confidential sex education notes from talking to the students. It didn't take long for karma to hit back. In the Sex Education season 2 finale, he was put on a leave of absence by school board chair Maxine (T'Nia Miller), after he made a scene in the middle of Lily's (Tanya Reynolds) contemporary Romeo and Juliet play. During his meltdown, Headmaster Groff blamed Jean and let his true colors show. With him out of the school, the position of headmaster is currently vacant, waiting to be filled possibly next season.
After his wreck of a party, a drunken Otis discovers that he unknowingly had intercourse with Ruby (Mimi Keene). With his memory of the night hazy due to the quantity of alcohol he drank, he asked her if they used contraception. At first, Ruby was confident they did use a condom, although she admitted that she couldn't find where it is. Worried about the possibility of being pregnant, the pair go to a pharmacy to get some day-after pills, but with no guarantee that she's not really pregnant, there's still a chance that Sex Education season 3 could further complicate Otis' life by revealing that he's fathering a child.
Sex Education season 1 set up a romance between Adam (Connor Swindells) and Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), but even before the pair could explore their feelings towards each other, they were pulled apart when the former was sent by Headmaster Groff to an army school. After his valiant efforts to fit in backfired, Adam was ultimately kicked out, leading to his return and reuniting with Eric. It wasn't an easy road for them, and after a lot of waffling from both sides, they're finally together. The question is, will they be able to sustain their relationship?
With Adam finally able to sort out his love life by admitting his attraction to Eric, what are his chances of returning to Moordale? He has expressed his desire to return to school to his parents, and he even thought about begging for his old job back to get his act together. But after his epic declaration of love, Sex Education season 2 leaves his personal arc in limbo. It's curious how the fact that his father is no longer headmaster will affect his chances of re-entering his old high school.
Otis and Maeve decided to restart their sex clinic business in Sex Education season 2, but the arrival of Jean at the school hindered their operations and drastically decreased their clients. In the finale, Otis comes clean about running a sex clinic underground. It's unclear if there will be any fallout from his and Maeve's business, especially with Headmaster Groff now kicked out of Moordale. But is Groff's replacement pursues them for their wrongdoing, it's curious what the ramifications will be. If they get away with it scot-free, it's interesting to see if there's a chance they'll continue providing advice to their peers.
Sex Education season 2 featured a string of complicated romances, so the progression of Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) and Viv's (Chinenye Ezeudu) platonic friendship was refreshing. The unlikely pals met when Viv was assigned as Jackson's academic tutor when he was temporarily off the swimming team due to an injury. Their relationship had its ups and downs, and in the finale, they ultimately decided to be friends again after going through a rough patch. But is there a possibility that their friendship blossoms into a romance?
Aside from the not-so-minor detail that her boyfriend was pining for another girl, Ola's decision to break up with Otis also stemmed from her growing attraction to Lily. A series of dreams where she finds herself kissing her best friend helped her realized that she's pansexual, and decided to pursue a relationship with Lily. Lily was initially hesitant about it, but eventually relented. The pair seemed into each other and have taken their intimacy to the next level. Arguably the least complicated love line in Sex Education, many are wondering what's next for them.
One of the most sensitive subjects tackled in Sex Education season 2 revolved around Aimee's (Aimee Lou Wood) traumatic experience while riding the bus. On her way to school, she was sexually assaulted by a man who was inappropriately touching himself and had stained her jeans. She was going to let the whole thing slide, but Maeve convinced her to file a police report about what happened. While she acted fine after the incident, she was hiding the fact that she couldn't ride the bus anymore out of fear that it could happen again. The issue was rehashed by a group of girls who shared their own similar stories, providing Aimee the support she needed. This helped her overcome her fears and to ride the town buses again; however, with the investigation still open, there's still a chance that the culprit could be arrested.
