Star Wars: Ben Solo's Lightsaber is Reverse Engineered From Kylo Ren Design

Star Wars concept artist Matthew Savage unveiled a drawing of Ben Solo’s old Jedi lightsaber from Star Wars: The Last Jedi earlier this week, and it seems to have been inspired by his later, cross-shaped weapon as the villainous Kylo RenStar Wars just wrapped a huge month which included the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That film is the final addition to the impressive Skywalker saga, composed of nine films total. However, the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has many thinking back to the previous film, 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In The Last Jedi, Ben’s sword can be seen in a brief flashback to the night of his turn to the dark side, when his uncle, Luke Skywalker, nearly killed him to prevent a sinister future from coming to pass. The old master would stop himself, but not before Ben saw what was about to happen and lashed out in what he thought was self-defense. This leveled Luke’s Jedi school on the island world of Ahch-To and helped Ben slide into his destined role as the villain of the sequel trilogy.

As can be seen in Savage's Instagram post, Ben’s old saber bears a resemblance to the one he would later wield as Kylo Ren, albeit with a shinier, complete casing and without the dark lord’s signature crossguard emitter. You can check out Savage's lightsaber post below:

Once he took up the mantle of Kylo Ren, Ben modified his original lightsaber into the one he would use throughout the trilogy, adding in the crossguard to account for the damaged red crystal he replaced its blue one with. However, during the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Ben tossed this saber into the waters of the ocean moon Kef Bir, finally rejecting his dark side identity at the urging of his late father, Han Solo. He then wields the blade used by his grandfather, Anakin, until his sacrifice to restore Rey at the end of the film.

Looking at the pre-turn lightsaber hilt, you can see the contrast between the shiny, clean, and hopeful looking sword of Ben Solo and the dark, bare, and unstable one used by Kylo Ren. The traces of the weapon it would become are there, namely in the design of the bottom hilt and shaft. Compared to the one in the image, the handle of Kylo’s blade looks almost burned, likely by its damaged crystal. It serves as a neat visual reminder of the corruption of the dark side in the Star Wars universe, a corruption that began during that fateful night in The Last Jedi.
