Star Wars: Clone Wars Season 7 Retcons Ahsoka's Lightsaber Color

A recent trailer for Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 indicates that the new season retcons Ahsoka Tano's lightsaber color. The epic conclusion to The Clone Wars has been long anticipated by Star Wars fans, and the promotional material leading up to its release on Disney+ has had the fan base in a frenzy. The show seeks to tie up loose ends and at last connect itself to the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and beyond. Eagle eyed fans have spotted one Revenge of the Sith retcon so far, but it has been revealed that there is another.

The life of Ahsoka Tano in the Star Wars timeline has been fairly well documented at this point. Despite a rough start with The Clone Wars movie, across all forms of media, her story has been fleshed out in great detail, keeping her woven into Star Wars canon for a long time now. Her life after Order 66 is especially of note here. The Ahsoka novel goes into detail about how she and Captain Rex went about going into hiding following the event. She says that the two of them faked their deaths in order to blend in better, with her even leaving her original green lightsabers in her "grave" to further sell her demise. This would explain why when she appeared in Star Wars Rebels, she came armed with new ones with white blades.

This is where her stories begin to conflict, as her appearance in The Clone Wars season 7 would beg to differ with the novel. In the Clone Wars season 7 trailer, she can be seen wielding a set of blue lightsabers against Darth Maul, totally different than the ones she's known for. The question is, where are her original green lightsabers? The novel states she buried them after Order 66, meaning she either still has them and simply chose not to use them at the time of season 7, or most likely, there was a retcon here. It could be that these blue ones were given to her by Anakin for use during the Siege of Mandalore just before Order 66 was executed, but this is currently unknown, as is why she's using them in the first place.

At any rate, these being random lightsabers diminishes the emotional weight of her leaving them behind. The bond between a Jedi and their lightsaber has been well established in Star Wars since the beginning. The ones she uses in The Clone Wars' upcoming season could have belonged to anyone, so the same resonance as her personal set isn't there, if these are the ones she now refers to. Rex and Ahsoka faking their deaths and audiences later watching her leave behind her true lightsabers would be a heartwrenching scene to witness. At last burying her Jedi past - literally and metaphorically - could have proved to be a powerful moment.

Perhaps it could still happen, but as it stands, there is a lack of consistency between the novel and the series, one that looks to retell the story of Ahsoka's iconic weapons. While it is, of course, great to see such a popular and well written character as Ahsoka back on screen, it does sting a bit that her story may be robbed of a significant moment. With The Clone Wars soon overlapping with Revenge of the Sith, there will a plethora of tear-jerking episodes as it is, but that, of course, is no excuse. This is truly the end, and small retcons like this can be bothersome in enjoying the overall product and in understanding the emotional journey the characters have gone through over the years.
