Fans realized a classic item of meme legend is missing from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, throwing the series' ardent online community into collective despair. The resultant outcry and commiseration are mostly tongue-in-cheek, but it's still a loss to many longtime Animal Crossing players.
The recent release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch has given players virtually everything they've wanted since the franchise first premiered on the GameCube, directly addressing many fan concerns and requests that have piled up over the years. It's got a lighthearted style so cute that it hurts, and it couldn't have come at a better time for early adopters left with little else to do during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. So far, the biggest problems the game has posed to most players are what color their roofs should be or how to name their islands, so an actual complaint - however mild - is almost astonishing to from such a satisfied community.
Most players have been too busy collecting creatures and building their island homes to notice the legendary froggy chair's absence. The widest awareness of its ghastly omission was spread by Reddit meme community r/ThanosDidNothingWrong, of all places. User brighamman0 broke the news to unsuspecting fans on launch day with the below meme, receiving over 12,000 submission karma in an outpour of grief and solidarity.
The froggy chair has been in every franchise title, from the original to Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the Nintendo 3DS. Recently, its last appearance spawned the largest and inarguably most hilarious in-joke to ever come out of the series. The Animal Crossing fanbase, who can always be relied upon for their creativity and humor, has since run wild with the meme, creating a wide assortment of froggy chair-centric images and videos that range from cute to surreal. It's no wonder, then, that players are taking it so hard that their most beloved piece of furniture is nowhere to be found in the game's code. Still, they're nonetheless weathering the disappointment with the level of wholesome wit that other developers only wish their communities possessed.
The froggy chair may be missing in action for now, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons and its colorful cast of villagers live on to fight another day. All may not be lost; however, the game's online functionality and Nintendo's commitment to updating it for years to come could mean that the froggy chair may yet return in all its green glory sometime in the future.
