The quality of films that have been released under the Pixar studio is nothing short of masterful. These films have a near-perfect record, with only one film considered to be a “bad” one. As for the Finding Nemo series, most fans would agree that both movies have been awesome.
However, there’s a debate over which one of the two could be considered better than the other. After all, Finding Dory’s superb box office success does make it worthy of being spoken in the same breath as the original. From the intro where Marlin’s family is killed to Nemo getting taken, and even to the ending where Marlin learns to let go, the film had it all.
The sequel didn’t feature these emotional moments for Nemo and Marlin, instead reserving them almost exclusively for Dory. There was also a lack of emotional sequences as a whole in the second movie, making the first one the best choice if you want to let your feelings run free.

One really has to get themselves in the whole viewing experience to watch Finding Nemo at a stretch, what with the movie having many slow moments to illustrate Marlin’s inner struggle. However, Finding Dory is a better choice for a fast-paced watch.
Since the film is set in an extremely short span, it can easily be viewed at a stretch without feeling as if you’ve been watching it too long. This quicker pace also hides in some of the film’s weaknesses, seeing as you’re made to be invested right from the get-go.
4 Dialogue: Finding Nemo
Even almost two decades since the film’s release, fans haven’t forgotten all the lovely quotes that came out of Finding Nemo. Some of these have become part of contemporary history, with the newer generation also learning the quotes as a result.
The overall dialogue for Finding Nemo is top-notch too, with conversation pieces like Marlin and Dory’s bonding moments, or even the talk with the whale being completely genuine. Finding Dory doesn’t even have half the kind of quotes that Finding Nemo conjured.
3 Comedy: Finding Dory
Another difficult point to consider, but Finding Dory was stronger here owing to its quick pace. As characters weaved in and out quickly, their funnier sides were much better pronounced. The faster pace also brought out more hilarity due to the comedy of errors on display.
While Finding Nemo forwent comedic moments in favor of storytelling, such as the scenes involving the Tank gang, the sequel had something funny in store wherever Dory found herself in. This makes Finding Dory the movie you want for a quick laugh.
2 Critical And Audience Reception: Finding Nemo
Ultimately, critical opinion really does mean a lot, seeing as people are influenced to watch a movie based on the hype created by the consensus among these critics. While both movies boast astounding acclaim, the first one is the clear winner.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Finding Dory has a 94% rating, but is trumped by Finding Nemo’s incredible score of 99%! Even in the audience front, there’s no real competition, with the sequel only managing a 7.3 IMDb score compared to the original’s quite high figure of 8.1.

It mainly came down to the originality aspect that brought us to the conclusion that Finding Nemo is the superior film. Finding Dory might have done better had it been about a different character or a separate setting, but it had too many elements that were already covered by the first installment.
With a lovely mix of emotion, comedy, a focus on being appealing to children and adults, along with a beautifully written script, Finding Nemo just doesn't go wrong in any area. If it comes down to absolutely having to choose between one of these two films, then you shouldn’t hesitate to go with the original movie to have a great time.
