The finale of How I Met Your Mother unfortunately robbed Robin of a lot of her likability factor as she backtracked on her character development. However, that doesn’t mean she was a bad character by any means, and there’s still enough we can appreciate about her.
Having been the fierce, independent woman she was, Robin Scherbatsky was very outspoken in her beliefs, and this led to some hilarious quotes coming the audience’s way. And yet, Robin also had emotional arcs that she went through, which brought us great quotes in that regard. Here are five of both Robin’s funniest and most heartbreaking quotes.
10 Funniest: "Well, You're One-Quarter Canadian, So By That Logic You One-Quarter Suck."
Barney might have awesome quotes and pick-up lines of his own, but he can never have any comeback for being called a Canadian. After Robin found out that he had a Canadian grandparent, she ensured he wouldn’t get away with insulting her nationality ever again.
After Barney once again took a shot at her country by claiming it sucks, Robin instantly hit back that by his logic, he sucked himself since he was technically Canadian. Not only did this put Barney in his place, it also meant Robin had him stumped for words.
9 Heartbreaking: "I May Not Love You The Way You Love Me, But I Do Love You."
This was heartbreaking twofold because it affected both Robin and Ted. After he professed his love for her, Robin had no choice but to turn him down since she didn’t return those feelings. However, she did point out that it didn’t mean she didn’t still love him.
Here, Robin was fighting for her friendship with Ted as she appealed to him that just because she didn’t feel romantically toward him, didn’t mean there was no love there. Sadly, this argument didn’t sit well with Ted.
8 Funniest: "But...Ummm."
If there was a catchphrase that we could attribute to Robin, it would have to be this one. Not knowing she had a tendency to say this, Robin ended up turning into a drinking game as viewers would take shots every time she said it.
The funniest use of this quote came at her own doing, though, as Robin would repeat it over and over again when she found out about the game, causing the players to have a horrible hangover the next day.
7 Heartbreaking: "Why Am I Constantly Looking For Reasons not To Be Happy?"
The argument could be made that many of Robin’s failures in relationships were her own fault, like when she would jump into a relationship with a new guy without telling him that she didn’t want children. Inevitably, she’d be the one to mess things up by creating scenarios that would lead to breakups.
Still, it doesn’t mean you couldn’t sympathize with her, especially when she happened upon this realization and openly wept in a therapy session, asking herself this same question.
6 Funniest: "Oh, That's Right. I'm Alone."
To put things into context, Robin said this at a time when her friends were in relationships and she had just ended things with Kevin. When the gang made plans for couple activities, Robin pretended to talk to her imaginary boyfriend and invited him along.
After a second’s worth of an awkward pause, she sarcastically informed her friends that she was alone. The upside to this is that Robin at least had a funny spin to put on things, even when she wasn’t in a relationship.
5 Heartbreaking: "Carrots And Peas."
It’s incredible how a seemingly ridiculous statement can carry such a sad sentiment attached to it. In this episode, Robin found out her ex-boyfriends resented that she made them feel unneeded, and went to Barney for comfort. However, in his attempt to make a move on a girl, Barney only pretended to listen to Robin, mouthing “carrots and peas.”
Now really feeling as if her feelings didn’t matter, Robin sardonically responded with the same words to Barney when he attempted to apologize. It went to show how people simply assumed that Robin wouldn’t mind being brushed aside, when in reality she was hurting.
4 Funniest: "I'm Gonna Give You Summer Teeth...Some're Here, Some're There."
Robin’s funniest moments came when she went full-on Canadian mode, with one of these instances being when she was inebriated. After Lily attempted to calm her down, the drunk Robin became aggressive.
It was at this point where she uttered this quote, claiming she would give Lily “summer teeth” — a phrase for busted up teeth — then made a hilarious wordplay over it. This actually happens to be one of the more underrated comedic bits on the show, and is worth a replay.
3 Heartbreaking: "You Can't Run Back To The Past Because It's Familiar."
Robin’s friendships might not have been as memorable as some other ones, but she did always have her pals’ backs. Case in point was when she stopped Ted from pursuing Zoey again. Here, she and Barney advised him against it because having a familiar feeling didn’t mean a happy relationship.
The sad thing about this was that she said it while looking at Barney, as Robin actually did want to return to her relationship with him. However, knowing that they would have some new problem down the line, she pretended otherwise and advised herself against going back to him.
2 Funniest: "Nobody Asked You, Patrice!"
Maybe we spoke too soon when we mentioned Robin’s catchphrase, because this probably qualifies as a better option. Robin’s hatred for Patrice was legendary, mostly because she made no attempts in hiding it.
While sweet-natured Patrice did everything she could to become Robin’s friend, the latter loathed any word that came out of Patrice's mouth. To this end, Robin was known to scream at the top of her lungs that Patrice’s opinion was not appreciated. The way she went absolutely berserk is what made it so amusing.
1 Heartbreaking: "It's One Thing To Not Want Something. It's Another To Be Told You Can't Have It."
Having kids was something that was never in Robin’s plans, and she didn’t give it a second thought until she was informed that she couldn’t have children even if she wanted to. While this might have sounded like the best deal, it instead led to a period of deep sadness for her.
If you’re unsure why she felt that way, then this quote put it in the best perspective. It was the fact that she couldn’t change her mind at all that got to her.
