Warning: Major SPOILERS ahead for On My Block season 3!
On My Block season 3 picked up just where the last installment left off but by the end, there were numerous questions left unanswered. Rather than the typical cliffhanger format used in the past, the series went with a shocking time jump. The Netflix series created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft has featured 10-episode seasons in the past, but the most recent was shortened to eight.
After a tumultuous second season that involved taking down a rival gang, Monse (Sierra Capri), Cesar (Diego Tinoco), Ruby (Jason Genao), and Jamal (Brett Gray) are kidnapped. As revealed in the teaser trailer, the group is taken by Cuchillos, the leader of the Santos. They are then forced to go on a wild goose chase to find a former gang member. As they embark on their mission, they each struggle with other aspects of their lives in addition to the ongoing threat from the looming gang leader tracking their progress.
Even though multiple questions arise throughout the season, most stem from the shocking time jump that closes out season 3. It puts the major characters in head-scratching situations while pointing at a bigger problem plaguing the core friend group. That said, here are the biggest questions that On My Block needs to answer.
Before Monse leaves for her east coast private boarding school, she feels a bit anxious about leaving the only place she's ever known. Despite the recent tension, her best friends arrive to see her off. Monse worries that the group will forget about her, but in the time jump, she's the one doing the forgetting. She seems to have fit in quite well with her classmates, making a new group of close friends. The picture of her with Cesar, Ruby, and Jamal is pushed behind other items on her bedside table, indicating that they aren't a priority. It's possible that something big led them to become estranged or maybe they truly grew apart.
Jamal was on the Freeridge High football team when On My Block first debuted. He made it pretty clear that he hated the sport and was only playing to appease his father. In reality, Jamal constantly faked injuries so he wouldn't have to play before quitting, which led him to pretend he was still on the team to hide the news. In the time jump, however, Jamal is seen wearing his football jersey and hanging out with the jocks. This is a bit of a surprise since Jamal doesn't identify with the school's athletes, nor did he share any indication of being interested in rejoining the team. Does Jamal go on to realize that he's a skilled athlete in the two-year timeframe or is there an ulterior motive for being on the team?
While Jamal is shown with his football buddies, Ruby walks by holding hands with his girlfriend, Jasmine. They give each other an odd look, but it certainly isn't friendly. The interaction hints that something broke them apart as good friends. Out of the core four, Jamal and Ruby were always extremely close. That is no longer the case, and it will be interesting to see what led to this divide. If an event tore Jamal and Ruby apart, it's likely to have affected the entire group explaining their distance in the time jump.
Throughout On My Block, Spooky a.k.a. Oscar (Julio Macias) served as a leader within the Santos. In season 3, he comes to realize that maybe he wants a life outside of the gang. He's done with the turf wars and the constant threat of violence targeting his family and neighborhood. After making a deal with 19th Street, Spooky mentions that he wants adult problems and maybe a wife or a child. The flashforward reveals that Spooky gets his wish at a family, but how exactly was he able to leave the Santos? Cesar had to buy his way out of the gang, and it seems like Spooky would have an even more difficult time being able to leave.
When Cuchillos forces the core four into finding Lil Ricky, she claims that they will be gifted the Roller World money if the mission is a success. Spooky later concocts a plan with 19th Street, and Cuchillos gets killed. Somewhere along the way Spooky is badly injured and goes to Abuelita for medical assistance. While she stitches him up, the bag filled with the Roller World money can be seen, meaning he recovered it when Cuchillos is killed. It's unclear what Spooky does with the money, but he may use it to get out of the Santos. There's also a chance that he split it with Monse, Ruby, and Jamal since some of them were counting on the income.
The biggest surprise surrounding the future of the Santos isn't just Spooky's exit but also Cesar's involvement with the gang. He may have felt forced into the gang life for most of his life but tried to avoid following in his brother's footsteps. By the end of the time jump, Cesar is back with the Santos and looks to be some type of leader, possibly filling the void left by Spooky. He has a shaved head and a big Santos tattoo revealing that he's all in with this kind of life. Did a breakup with his friends lead to Cesar finding connections elsewhere?
The driving force behind season 3 centered on the mystery of Lil Ricky. Viewers were already well aware of the former Santos member's involvement with the Roller World heist, but he was presumed dead. Cuchillos then claims that Lil Ricky is very much alive and needs the core four to find him. Even though they go on the search, the mystery of Lil Ricky's whereabouts is never solved. It's unlikely that this subplot is over since so much time was spent on the mystery. Expect more chapters in the Lil Ricky saga to come back into play with season 4 and beyond.
Last, viewers might be wondering what the two-year time jump means for On My Block season 4. Netflix hasn't renewed the series as of yet, but based on the ending, there's certainly more of the story to come. Will the series pick up after the time jump, or will it follow the primary timeline and fill in the blanks that led up to those shocking moments? Stay tuned for what On My Block has in store for the future.
