Parks & Rec: Debunking The "Ron Is April's Dad" Theory

Some Parks and Recreation viewers were convinced that Ron Swanson wasn't just April Ludgate's boss, but he was also her real father. During the NBC sitcom's run, a fan theory was developed around the idea that April's mother had an affair with Ron, and that this was the explanation for their similar personality traits. The characters were played by Nick Offerman and Aubrey Plaza for the duration of Parks and Rec's seven-season run. Here's why the father-daughter theory has no legs to stand on.

April started out as an intern for Pawnee's Parks and Recreation department where Ron served as the director. In Parks and Rec season 2, April volunteered to be Ron's assistant. She was given a full-time job in the town hall building, but she truly just wanted a reason to spend more time with Andy Dwyer. Over time, April grew her career in the Parks Department with the help of Leslie Knope, but Ron always stood by as a mentor. Ron and April had a unique understanding of one another which forged into a meaningful friendship - a rarity for both of them.

April was the perfect candidate for Ron's assistant, since she protected him from interacting with Pawnee citizens... That is, until she accidentally scheduled over 90 meetings on one day and forced herself to quit due to the flub. Ron then went to her house to convince her to come back and discovered that April knew about his secret identity as jazz musician Duke Silver. April's mother was a big fan and had all of his albums, so April was fully aware of her boss' alter ego. The fan theory ran with that discovery and added that April's mother, Rita, could have gone to Duke's shows in the past and had a fling with him resulting in a daughter. Though the idea might seem compelling, there's no real evidence that the two were related.

One of the best aspects of Parks and Rec was the friendship between the Parks Department employees despite their differences in personality. Ron and April's relationship was one of the more exciting connections to watch evolve throughout the series. They both were uninterested in their jobs and had trouble opening up to people. Ron went on to become a father figure to April as she found solace in gaining respect from a distinguished adult in her life. If they ended up being related, their bond wouldn't have felt as unique or organic.

Other than Rita being a Duke Silver fan, there was never any evidence suggesting that April could be Ron's daughter. April never questioned the identity of her dad, nor did Ron ever wonder if he had a daughter from a past affair. The fact that April and her sister are so much alike also debunk the theory. Rita was hardly present in Parks and Recreation and if she truly had a past with Ron, the character would have had more involvement. The series would have never glossed over something so monumental as two main characters being unknowingly related.
