Star Wars: 10 Unanswered Questions We Still Have About Lightsabers

If there is any singular item that was born in the Star Wars franchise that is recognizable across all the world in pop culture, it is the lightsaber. The sound of it igniting, the look of the colorful blade, the clashing together in epic battles, all of it is instantly recognizable and one of the biggest things to have ever come out of the massive franchise.

There has been a lot of lightsabers across the various stories told in the Star Wars universe and some history behind them. However, there are a lot of things still unknown in the new canon that relate to the iconic weapon of Force users. Here are ten unanswered questions we still have about lightsabers.

10 WHY THE SAME HILTS THROUGHOUT THE CLONE WARS ERA?

During the time of the Clone Wars, the vast majority of Jedi had very similar lightsabers. Save for the color and the hilt design; the lightsabers were mostly all single-bladed and rounded.

As seen in Rebels, crossguard lightsabers were common in earlier days. Also, while not concrete, the released concept art for Project Luminous, there are a variety of lightsaber hilts such as sword-like sabers. While there are a couple of double-bladed sabers, as well as split sabers, there are not many, and it makes one wonder what happened to a variety of other designs.

9 WHY ARE SOME COLOURS SO RARE?

The kyber crystal is clear in color before a Jedi retrieves it. It then colorizes itself for the Jedi, most commonly blue and green. There are other instances, of course, such as Mace Windu's purple.

Why then, if the crystal changes for the Jedi, are some colors so rare? In Legends, crystals were already colors, and so were found in crystal caves, etc. But, since in canon the crystal changes itself, why are there so few of any other colors.

8 WHO CREATED THE PROTO-SABER AND WHEN?

First seen in the VR game Secrets Of The Empire, the proto-saber is the oldest known lightsaber in the current canon. It has two prongs that rise from a crossguard, and when activated, the energy shot up the prongs. It resides in Vaders castle in the game and raises some questions.

The main questions are who was the creator of the proto-saber, and when they created it. It is an ancient device. Also, how did Vader come into possession of it, it must have been after his fall to the dark side, but who had it before him?

7 WERE THERE OTHER VERSIONS OF THE PROTO-SABER?

Th proto-saber is proof that whoever was attempting to make the saber, likely Jedi of course, did not manage to perfect it the first time. In that case, it is doubtful they managed to complete it immediately after.

So how many more prototype lightsabers were there? And how wild did the designs get? Fans of Legends will know there are some ridiculous lightsabers out there, perhaps in future comics, the early days of the saber will undergo exploration.

6 WHO PERFECTED THE LIGHTSABER?

Some of the critical components to the inner workings of a lightsaber include the appropriately sized power cell, an emitter matrix, an activator, a blade emitter shroud, and various other parts.

So, after these proto-sabers, who managed to bring these parts together? How long did it take? And when did this happen? Whoever done such a thing would have shared their design around, unless, of course, it was a group effort.

5 HOW DID ANAKIN'S LIGHTSABER CALL TO REY?

In The Force Awakens, while in Maz Kanata's castle, Rey heard something call out to her from the lower level of the castle. This lightsaber turned out to be the lightsaber of Anakin Skywalker, which gave Rey a Force vision.

For years now, fans have been puzzled about how the lightsaber was able to call out to Rey. Lightsabers, more specifically the crystals, are attuned to the Force. But there does not seem to be a reason why the lightsaber called out to Rey specifically, especially since she has nothing to do with Anakin.

4 WHY ARE THERE ONLY EIGHT OFFICIAL FORMS OF COMBAT?

Lightsaber duels have consistently been one of the best parts of Star Wars for over forty years. These battles though are more than just cool flashy fights; there is real combat behind them.

There are eight lightsaber forms, Shii-Cho, Makashi, Soresu, Ataru, Shien, Niman, and Juyo/Vaapad. With so many Jedi, over thousands of years, it begs the question as to why there are only eight forms. These forms can have their spins by specific Jedi or Sith, but it is insane that there are only eight after all the generations.

3 DOES A SITH NEED TO KILL A JEDI TO GET THEIR LIGHTSABER CRYSTAL?

The process of a Sith obtaining the red of their lightsaber is bleeding the crystal. It is how it sounds. It seems to be that a Jedi must be killed, and their lightsaber kyber crystal taken and bled to give Sith their lightsaber, or just a fallen Jedi bleeding their own.

However, was this necessary? Take Maul; for example, he had his red lightsaber before he fought a Jedi. It is entirely possible Palpatine killed a Jedi and gave it to Maul, but the question stands, does a Jedi need to die or turn to the Dark Side for their crystal to be bled?

2 WHAT HAPPENED TO ANAKIN/LUKE'S LIGHTSABER?

The final film in the sequel trilogy of Star Wars left a lot of things unresolved, and many a question unanswered. One of the very biggest is the status of Anakin/Luke Skywalker's famous blue lightsaber.

It calls to Rey from Maz's castle, but it is never explained how Maz came into possession of the lightsaber to begin with. The last time it was seen, it was falling down Cloud City alongside Luke's right hand. Who retrieved it, and how? And how did it find itself in a box in Maz Kanata's basement?

1 WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THEIR COLOURS?

In Legends, the lightsaber colors that every Star Wars fan has come to love had fleshed out meanings, and deliberate purposes as to why the person who had the lightsaber wielded it. In canon, there is some mild explanation and reason, but not much.

Red is wielded by Sith, as has always been the case through the process of bleeding kyber crystals, which is representative of the hatred and anger they possess. But what about other colors? What do they mean? How does the crystal conclude that the Jedi who finds it, is refective of blue, or green, or some rarer colors?
