The Hunt is finally available for streaming, The movie was meant to come out in September 2019 but its release was put on hold after its subject matter generated controversy. The movie was finally released on 13th March and while it does have plenty of shocking moments, several critics have noted that it's not is not as offensive as initially suggested.
The movie follows 12 strangers who wake up in a field referred to as the Manor House without knowing how they got there. They are given weapons to defend themselves before mysterious attackers begin hunting them one at a time. It turns out the hunters are a group of wealthy individuals who have decided to kill for sport. Here are the most shocking moments in the movie.
10 Yoga Pants Dies Courtesy Of A Sniper Shot
Some of the characters in The Hunt have hilarious names. One of the very first ones that we are introduced to is a woman named Yoga Pants (Emma Roberts). Just like the other victims, she is gagged but she manages to take off her own gag as well as that of a fellow male victim.
A few moments later, gunshots start coming out of nowhere and as she's hiding, she gets a bullet in the skull. This moment comes as a major shock because the first few moments imply that Roberts—who stars in American Horror Story—is going to be in the main protagonist.
9 Trucker Shane Getting Blown Up By A Landmine
Surely, we all thought Justin Harley from This Is Us would last in the movie too. As soon as the shootings start, there's hope that he might be the hero. Hartle's character Trucker Shane witnesses the death of Yoga Pants before making a run to the woods.
He also manages to rescue a woman who is trapped in a spike pit. But that's just about it for Trucker. While carrying the woman, he steps on a landmine and they both end up getting blown to pieces. At that point, it's very easy to be angry. Will the movie end in 5 minutes? Not at all.
8 Athena's Explanation For The Killings
At the beginning of the film, it was unclear why people were getting murdered left, right and center. However, during the final showdown, the reason becomes clear. The leader of the elites named Athena gives the mandatory supervillain speech in which she describes why they kidnapped and hunted the 12 people. A year earlier, Athena and her group of elitist friends had joked via text messages about killing people for fun. These messages ended up leaking online and the 12 people shared them without verifying if there was any truth to it.
Since Athena and her friends were well-respected members of the society, they ended up getting 'canceled.' They lost everything and thus they got angry. They thus decided to do what they had joked about anyway and punish the people responsible for their downfall for not verifying facts.
7 The Gas Station
While running away from the mystery people that are attacking them, two of the victims walk into a shop in a gas station and find an elderly man and woman. It turns out the gas station is built to look like it's in Arkansas while its actually in Croatia where the game is taking place.
It also turns out that the elderly couple is part of the hunters. They go on to kill the two unsuspecting victims in a brutal manner. For comedic relief, one victim's name is Staten Island. Luckily, the victims get justice when the couple is murdered later on by the main protagonist Crystal (Betty Gilpin).
6 A Stiletto To The Eye
The Hunt begins in a manner meant to chase aways viewers who aren't fans of blood and gore. A couple of wealthy individuals are shown on a plane chatting and having a good time. All of a sudden, someone is murdered, blood spills all over and the rest act like it's not a big deal.
It is revealed that the murdered person is one of the 12 kidnapped victims who woke up earlier than expected. The hunters thus decide to kill him before the games at The Manor begin. The victim is stabbed at first then Athena takes things a bit too far by gouging his eye out with a stiletto.
5 The Pig Wearing A Shirt
There is a clothed pig named Orwell that appears in various scenes in the movie. It first appears when we are introduced to the 12 victims in The Manor. Orwell comes out of a wooden case containing weapons that the victims are given to defend themselves with. It also comes out just before Crystal and Don are arrested.
The pig is a reference to George Orwell's popular novel Animal Farm in which pigs believe they are the superior species hence they try to dethrone humans. Its presence in the film is to emphasize the political divides of America as well as the social divides where certain groups tend to believe they are better than the other.
4 Body In The Trunk
When Crystal and Don are being driven from the train station by a 'government official' that they just met, it soon becomes clear to Crystal that he is one of the hunters. His behavior doesn't seem normal to her so she pushes him out of the car before running him over.
A shocked Don asks her why she did that but then she opens the boot and there is a dead body of one of the hunted people in there. Don and Crystal then get back into the car and go to find the rest of the hunters. This serves as one of the film's many interesting twists. No one is who they appear to be.
3 The Revelation That Don Wasn't A Hunter
At some point in the movie, Crystal meets a man named Don who apparently is also being hunted. The two eventually track down the hunters and Crystal manages to kill them. But moments later, a message from the leader Athena comes on the radio call.
She tells Crystal that Don is one of the hunters. Not one to take any chances, Crystal kills him. However, during the final showdown with Athena at her mansion, the leader of the hunters suggests that Don was never a hunter. The major theme of the movie is emphasized once again. Which is believing and acting on certain information without bothering to find out if it's true.
2 They Got The Wrong Crystal
In The Hunt's final moments, we are served with a bloody fight between the antagonist Athena and the protagonist Crystal. Athena eventually ends up dead. However, Athena and her team of hunters could have gotten away with their bloody hobby if they hadn't made one specific mistake: abducting a person with military training.
It is revealed that while selected their targets, they accidentally took Crystal May instead of Crystal Mae who was one of the people that shared the messages online. The problem is that the Crystal they picked is a car rental employee in Mississippi who was once in the military. So she ended up killing them all.
1 Crystal Living Athena's Life
After managing to kill Athena, a deeply wounded Crystal doesn't just leave, She wears one of Athena's favorite dresses, slides her feet into her heels and grabs the expensive bottle of wine that Athena was trying so hard to save during the fight.
She then goes to Athena's private jet and instructs the pilot and crew to take her back home to America. It's a shocking yet beautiful moment that shows how it feels like for a person of a lower class to live the life of a person of a higher class.
