The Outsider Characters Sorted Into Their Hogwarts Houses

The Outsider is a television mini-series on HBO based on Stephen King's 2018 novel of the same name. It is a crime drama chronicling the investigation of the murder of young Frankie Peterson and how all evidence points to Terry Maitland, who also has evidence that he was, in fact, several hours away at the time of the murder.

This discrepancy launches a more private investigation in which Terry and his wife Gloria's lawyer, Howard "Howie" Saloman, enlists two private investigators, Alec Pelley and Holly Gibney. This team was joined by Detective Ralph Anderson and State Police Yunis Salbo. The investigation brought together an eclectic group of people with a wide range of personalities. If these people had the opportunity to be sorted into Hogwarts Houses, here is what they would be.

10 Andy Katcavage - Hufflepuff

Andy Katcavage was a character created specifically for the show. He was a security guard from Dayton, Ohio where he met Holly Gibney while she was investigating Terry Maitland and the time he had previously spent there. He and Holly developed a physical and later somewhat romantic relationship, giving him the motivation to also become involved in the investigation.

Andy is incredibly loyal, making him a Hufflepuff. Holly would call him while he was on the clock and he would help her do research. Furthermore, he eventually dropped everything and traveled down to Cherokee City, Georgia, and later to a cave festival in Tennessee in order to help Holly and the investigation.

9 Claude Bolton - Gryffindor

At first glance, Claude Bolton would seem like a Slytherin. He has a criminal record and had done time for it, and for most of the series works at a seedy strip club and bar as security and a bouncer. However, during the time of the series, he had been clean for several years and even tattooed "Can't" and "Must" on his fingers as a reminder of his struggles.

He eventually leaves the security job to move to Tennessee where his brother Seale lives in the hopes of making a fresh start. It takes a brave person to go to such measures to be clean and seek after a fresh start, especially after a life of struggling with addiction. Claude clearly values these ideals as well, making him a Gryffindor.

8 Jack Hoskins - Slytherin

Jack Hoskins is probably the least-developed character of the main cast. His only motivation is that El Cuco, the monster that the team ends up investigating, manipulates Jack to do his bidding because otherwise, he will kill him. Jack is highly motivated to stay alive, going to lengths such as kidnapping Holly and later following the investigators to Tennessee to attempt to kill all of them.

While Jack does not truly represent the values that are actually associated with the Slytherin House, he is very much a caricature of what Harry Potter fans consider to be Slytherins. Jack cares more about himself than other people and is out for his own self-preservation.

7 Alec Pelley - Gryffindor

Alec Pelley is a war veteran and a private investigator. It was he who suggests and later hires Holly Gibney to join the investigation. He originally opts not to go to Tennessee because he got a similar feeling when discussing the journey as he did when he went on caravans while deployed in the Middle East.

He eventually got over his unease and convinced Howie Saloman to join him. The two joined the rest of the investigation and continued on to help confront El Cuco. Alec, unfortunately, was killed by Jack, but the fact that he acted bravely when he felt scared means he definitely belongs in Gryffindor.

6 Howie Saloman - Slytherin

Howie Saloman, known as Howie Gould in the book, is a defense attorney with a private practice and is a family friend to the Maitlands. He always thinks objectively about his cases, admitting that he has represented some truly terrible people. He even told Claude Bolton that the fact that he doesn't remember representing him is a big compliment.

Howie is truly a lawyer in profession and personality. Even though he truly believes Terry is innocent and is intent on proving as much, he otherwise does not care about whether or not his clients were innocent, meaning that at the end of the day, he cared more about the paycheck (again with the exception of Terry's case). This mentality makes him a Slytherin.

5 Jeannie Anderson - Hufflepuff

Jeannie Anderson is Ralph's wife and works as a counselor. She is kind and compassionate and helps Ralph let go of his more logical ego. She acts as a middleman between the investigation and the Maitland family following Terry's death.

She offers safe spaces for Glory and her girls, Maya and Jessa, when Jessa had what everyone at first believed to be nightmares. She even stuck by Ralph when he was acting rashly about the investigation and when he decided to continue with the investigation even though El Cuco threatened his and Jeannie's lives. This makes her a true and loyal Hufflepuff.

4 Gloria "Glory" Maitland - Gryffindor

Glory Maitland, known as Marcy Maitland in the book, is Terry's widow. She deals with the aftereffects of Terry's arrest for the murder of Frankie Peterson. Even after Terry's death and evidence had arisen of his innocence, civilians and the press still harassed Glory and her daughters. She was the most reluctant for the private investigation to occur, especially after Holly presented evidence of a supernatural force, but she eventually came around. She even gets a job to support her family in the face of continued harassment.

Glory is obviously a Gryffindor. She sticks with her family and loved ones and will face anything in order to protect them.

3 Yunis "Yune" Sablo - Hufflepuff

Yunis Sablo, nicknamed Yune in the book, is a state policeman who got involved early in the investigation of Terry Maitland as the alleged murderer of Frankie Peterson. He was open to all evidence, even the contradicting evidence placing Terry in two different places at once. He was also among the first to accept the theory that El Cuco was behind Frankie's murder as well as other children's murders across the country.

Yunis sticks to his beliefs and supports others. He clearly represents traits valued by the Hufflepuff House and as such belongs there. It is his Hufflepuff traits that contribute to his success as a law enforcement officer.

2 Ralph Anderson - Gryffindor

Ralph Anderson is probably the main protagonist in the show. The main storyline focuses on him and how he contributes to the investigation. Ralph remains with the investigation in spite of his skepticism regarding the supernatural. He even agrees to face the supernatural force, El Cuco, head on after eventually accepting its existence.

His acceptance of the unexplained is not blind acceptance. He takes into consideration all evidence before making a decision. He may still have some hesitations after he accepts El Cuco, but he still finds it in him to face the monster, even with the possibility of his death. This places him in the Gryffindor House alongside Alec Pelley, Glory Maitland, and Claude Bolton.

1 Holly Gibney - Ravenclaw

Holly Gibney was originally introduced in Stephen King's Bill Hodges Trilogy, also known as the Mr. Mercedes Trilogy. She is a talented private investigator who is socially awkward and has weird hyper-fixations such as sports. As mentioned above, she is enlisted to aid the investigation per Alec Pelley's suggestion.

Holly is incredibly thorough and resourceful when it comes to research. And not only is she knowledgable, but she also can critically think, which does not always come with knowledge. She clearly values her mind and wisdom, placing her in the Ravenclaw House.
