Caroline Forbes initially became best friends with Stefan Salvatore in Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries. Their relationship evolved into something more in Season 6 and Steroline shippers were ecstatic - and distraught - when they married in Season 8's "I'll Wed You In The Golden Summertime" before Stefan's death.
Caroline and Stefan were a popular pairing, but many fans maintain that the Salvatore brother's heart truly belongs to Elena Gilbert. Caroline had multiple relationships in the show that was popular with the fandom. The series could have concluded differently if she had been with one of these characters instead...
10 Tyler Lockwood
Caroline grows close to Tyler in Season 2. She helps him cope with his new life as a werewolf whilst coming to terms with being a vampire after Katherine kills her with Damon's blood in her system. Caroline's relationship with Matt falls apart and the blonde vampire gradually falls in love with Tyler instead.
Caroline and Tyler faced countless threats to their relationship, including Klaus turning Tyler into a hybrid. The couple drifts apart after Tyler refuses to move on from his vendetta against the Original. Tyler was Caroline's first love and it would have been a sweet conclusion to see them reunite.
9 Matt Donovan
Matt initially struggles to move on from Elena in Season 1. He gradually gets to know Caroline throughout the season, however, and the two fall in love. Their relationship ends in Season 2 after Caroline becomes a vampire but, if she had stayed human, she likely would have remained with Matt.
Matt cared about Caroline deeply and continued to be her friend, despite being wary of her vampire nature later in the series. He was a caring and compassionate character whose values coincided with Caroline's.
8 Hayley Marshall
Caroline initially dislikes Hayley when the werewolf first arrives in Mystic Falls in Season 4. Tyler informs her that Hayley helped him break his sire bond to Klaus. Hayley flirts with Tyler which angers Caroline and later betrays them when Atticus Shane offers to help her find her family.
Hayley's relationship with Caroline ended on a bitter note, but they were fragile allies for a time. It would have been an interesting subversion of the love triangle to see the vampire and werewolf develop feelings for each other during their flirtation with Tyler.
7 Enzo St. John
Enzo first appears in the fifth season of The Vampire Diaries as the Augustine vampire. He initially flirts with Caroline and grows close to her throughout the series. In Season 6, the two vampires search for a way to bring Damon and Bonnie back and Enzo defends her when Stefan breaks her heart.
Caroline and Enzo's friendship is one of the most consistent relationships in the blonde vampire's life. Enzo fell in love with Bonnie before his death, but it would have been interesting to see him and Caroline pursuing a life on the road together.
6 Alaric Saltzman
Alaric's relationship with his former student Caroline is one of the more unpopular pairings in The Vampire Diaries' fandom. Caroline is happy with Alaric and her surrogate daughters Lizzie and Josie however, and Ric did care about her deeply.
Caroline found the family she never thought she could have since turning into a vampire with Alaric and the twins. Considering the heartbreak in her relationship with Stefan, maybe she should have stayed with Ric instead.
5 Elena Gilbert
Elena Gilbert is one of Caroline's best friends. Caroline is initially a frenemy of Elena's in Season 1 and is secretly jealous of her friend. They grow closer after Caroline becomes a vampire, however, and are best friends throughout the rest of the series.
Caroline loved Elena dearly and was distraught when Kai cursed her into a coma. She is one of the characters who continue to write diary entries for Elena throughout her enchanted sleep in the later seasons.
4 Bonnie Bennett
Bonnie is Caroline's other best friend and Caroline is arguably closer with the Bennett witch than she is with Elena. Although she is initially hesitant to help vampires, Bonnie creates a daylight ring for Caroline in Season 2. Caroline continues to search for a way to bring Bonnie back to life in Season 6 and the two are close throughout the series.
Caroline and Bonnie would have been an impressive power couple with the strength to protect Mystic Falls. Both characters strived to be good and risked their lives to defend their town and their friends.
3 Kol Mikaelson
Kol was a minor character in The Vampire Diaries but instantly became a fan-favorite due to his charm and charisma. He is revived in Season 3 and attends the Mikaelson family ball, where he has a confrontation with Damon Salvatore. Kol and Klaus have a brief encounter with Caroline in the Mystic Grill where Kol admires the blonde vampire, to his brother's fury.
Kol could have been a bad influence on Caroline, especially if he was still around during her no-humanity period in Season 6. This pairing could have led to another love triangle involving the Original hybrid.
2 Katherine Pierce
Katherine Pierce is another character who could have been an entertainingly awful influence on no-humanity Caroline. The Petrova doppelganger turned Caroline into a vampire in Season 2 and targeted Caroline and her friends throughout the series.
Nevertheless, Katherine was a great bad guy who fans loved to hate. An alliance with Caroline, who proved in Season 6 that she has a mean strike, could have been a passionate affair that would have devastated Mystic Falls.
1 Klaus Mikaelson
The Klaroline ship first set sail in Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries. Klaus cures Caroline of a werewolf bite and later develops romantic feelings for her. Caroline rejects him at first, but the two finally give in to their feelings in a steamy encounter during Season 5's "500 Years Of Solitude."
Many fans were hoping that Caroline would eventually travel to New Orleans and reunite with Klaus. The Original hybrid perished in the series finale of The Originals, however. Spin-off show Legacies could have been a different series had Klaus survived and reconnected with Caroline.
