Although Bradley Whitford will always be recognized for his long run in the political drama hit The West Wing as the comedic Josh Lyman, he still has continued to grow his career after the show's end.
After The West Wing, Whitford started getting roles in popular movies as a villain in the 2017 hit Get Out and had some Disney fun in 2013's Saving Mr. Banks. Whitford has been able to show his dramatic, comedic, and villainous acting skills through his decades-long career that he continues to add to with challenging and new roles. Thankfully, he shows no signs of slowing down as he's currently starring in Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale. Let's revisit some of Bradley Whitford's top-rated roles according to IMDb!
10 Saving Mr. Banks (2013) - 7.5
Saving Mr. Banks is based on the true story of Walt Disney propositioning the author of Mary Poppins (P.L. Travers) to let him turn her stories into a movie. Throughout the movie, the audience sees that the book's story is near and dear to the author's (Emma Thompson) heart and therefore she's very hesitant to Disney's (Tom Hanks) charms.
Bradley Whitford plays one of the writers for the Mary Poppins movie and they all create a fun rapport with Thompson. It has a great balance of comedy and serious drama and is a fun watch!
9 A Perfect World (1993) - 7.6
A Perfect World, directed by Clint Eastwood, follows a convict (Kevin Costner) who kidnaps a young boy and goes on the LAM. Surprisingly, the convict and his victim form a bond as they run away together. Eastwood plays the Texas Ranger responsible for hunting down Costner, and although he realizes Costner may be a good person overall, he still adheres to his duty. Bradley Whitford doesn't have a big role in this film, but overall it has good reviews and is worth checking out.
8 Philadelphia (1993) - 7.7
Philadelphia is the story of a lawyer (Tom Hanks) who hides his homosexuality and AIDS diagnosis because he is afraid it will negatively affect his career. He's proven right when a coworker figures out his secrets and he is shortly fired after all is revealed. Tom Hanks won multiple awards, including an Oscar, for his performance in this film. Bradley Whitford doesn't have a big role in this film either, but this well-known movie is certainly one to watch.
7 Get Out (2017) - 7.7
Jordan Peele's directorial debut horror/psychological thriller Get Out follows a young black man (Daniel Kaluuya) as he goes to meet his white girlfriend's (Allison Williams) family for the first time. He starts with having normal anxieties about meeting her parents and some comedic foreshadowing from his best friend warning him not to go to the house, but he gradually realizes that his friend was right.
The film divulges the truth of the girlfriend's family and Bradley Whitford plays the devilish father of the girlfriend who has some terrifying surgical techniques. It's a completely new movie that is worth a watch!
6 Awakenings (1990) - 7.8
Awakenings is based on the true story of a doctor (Robin Williams) in the 1960s experimenting with treatments for a group of catatonic patients. His hypothesis was that Parkinson's treatment would help these patients, and although he's met with a lot of skepticism, he's able to help this group of patients. It has great reviews and although Bradley Whitford doesn't have a big role it's worth a watch if you love Robin Williams and movies based on true stories.
5 Scent Of A Woman (1992) - 8.0
This drama follows a student (Chris O'Donnell) who agrees to babysit an unlikable and rough blind man (Al Pacino) because he needs the cash. It takes a while for the two to warm up to each other, but they gradually form a bond that surprises them both. Although Whitford isn't in the film much, it has great reviews and Pacino even won an Academy Award for his performance, so it's worth checking out!
4 The Good Guys (2010) - 8.1
The Good Guys was a television show about a typical team-up between two detectives, one a young by the book rookie (Colin Hanks) and the other an older rouge and washed-up detective (Bradley Whitford). The two build a fun and engaging rapport as they first are upset they're partnered up together, but find that they complement each other well. Although the show only lasted a year, it has great reviews and is a casual and quick watch. If you're a fan of police procedurals and Bradley Whitford, definitely check this one out.
3 Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip (2006-2007) - 8.2
This show follows the lives of the cast, crew, and writers of a live comedy skit show that airs every week. Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry star as writers for the show and hopefully its saving grace. The show started right after The West Wing ended and was also created by Aaron Sorkin. Although the comedy show had great reviews it only lasted a year. It's a quick and comedic watch that stars Bradley Whitford, worth checking out!
2 The Handmaid's Tale (2017-???) - 8.5
The Handmaid's Tale is a Hulu series based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. The show follows the aftermath of a Second Civil War. A totalitarian society now reigns over all people and forces fertile women to be child-bearing slaves.
Bradley Whitford is in the second and third season as one of the founders of the colonies and the creator of their economic system. He even won a Primetime Emmy for his performance. The show has great reviews and is an engaging and terrifying look into a dystopian future.
1 The West Wing (1999-2006) - 8.8
The West Wing follows the lives of the White House staff of the current president (Martin Sheen) as they tackle America's greatest problems. Bradley Whitford played Deputy Chief of Staff, Josh Lyman. In the role, he was able to show his comedic acting that was accented by the occasional dramatic storyline, which hit harder because of the character's normal goofy nature. The show is a classic and although Whitford's career is continuing to grow, he will always be known as Josh Lyman!
