Westworld: 5 Season 3 Fan Theories That Make Complete Sense (& 5 That Definitely Don't)

Season 3 of Westworld is hitting screens very soon, and there's already plenty to talk about. The trailers have fueled a lot of fan theories, but the way the last season ended also suggests that there's plenty more to discuss.

Fan theories fuel the discussion around these kinds of shows. With Westworld, some of these fan theories have been excellent and even correct in the past, while others are way off. Here are five theories that make total sense, and five that seem way off-base.

10 DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: REAL WORLD IS STILL THE PARK

The latest trailer really focused on the real world outside of the parks. Indeed, at the end of the last season, Dolores and a few other hosts actually left the parks and made their way into reality.

However, there are a few theories suggesting that these areas are still just part of the reality that has been constructed, as it's another land where humans can live out the ideal life that they want in a semi-realistic world. It seems a bit complicated, though, and would ruin the point of their escape.

9 MAKES SENSE: FORD IS ALIVE

Ford could very well be pulling the strings from the outside. Since he had all the capabilities of making his own hosts, it would be easy to swap out a host for the real human and have the robot killed in one of the most surprising deaths of the show.

This would really make sense as there's clearly another player moving the pieces on the chess board. This could all be part of an elaborate story that Ford created for himself when he started getting bored with the parks.

8 DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: PARKS WERE SHUT DOWN

There's been some speculation that the parks have been shut down, and the only people left in them are some of the evil robots. However, based on the amount of money that would be lost, this doesn't seem very likely.

What's more, we're travelling to new lands in the upcoming season, including one set in WWII. Since it seems that it's mainly Westworld that has gone a bit off the rails, it doesn't make much sense to close everything else.

7 MAKES SENSE: NO ONE IS SENTIENT

There have been plenty of people suggesting that none of the hosts are actually sentient at all,  and that they've all been programmed with this path. Even Maeve, who seems to show the most signs of having genuine original thought is being affected by someone else.

This fuels the theory that Ford is still alive too, as plenty of fans point out that he could still be writing the stories and affecting these hosts in some way, which of course would take away any free choices they seemingly had.

6 DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: HOSTS WANT A NORMAL LIFE

Although it's been pointed out that maybe the grand plan of Dolores is simply to have a normal life, every detail points to the contrary of this. Maeve may be the only one who wants some genuine normality.

Dolores and the others are clearly out for revenge, and may even be looking to wipe out all of humanity. The next season will surely answer the question of what they really want to achieve.

5 MAKES SENSE: MAEVE'S DAUGHTER IS REAL

Maeve and her daughter seem to have a bond that no one else does in terms of the hosts. Indeed, Dolores forgot about her father relatively quickly, and there are plenty of other relationships that were cut off after a while.

Some are making the point that maybe that was Maeve's real child, and that she had actually given birth to her. That would be such an advanced piece of robotics that Ford would encourage it at every opportunity.

4 DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: ARNOLD IS IN CONTROL

Fan theories are still spreading that Arnold, as some kind of artificial intelligence, is still taking control of the hosts and is ultimately in charge of what is happening. But it's more likely that Ford is filling this role.

It seems that the Arnold narrative has served its purpose and come to a fitting conclusion. To keep coming back to it would over-complicate matters. Perhaps it's better that other characters could now be the ones controlling the hosts.

3 MAKES SENSE: DELOS REPLACING HUMANS

With William especially being replaced by a robot, Dolores replacing a few humans with hosts, and Delos experimenting with swapping out humans after their death, there's a lot of evidence to support the fact they may be replacing humanity.

This allows businesses to carry on running and public figures to remain in the limelight. It also means that Delos gets a controlling interest in whatever that human was responsible for before their death.

2 DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: SIMULATED SEASONS

In every season of the show, someone has suggested that the world we're looking at is actually simulated. This doesn't add up at all, though. It makes no sense for the showrunners to have large portions of the series not actually happen.

If this was true, it would lead to serious fan disappointment and possibly backlash. People want these things to make sense within the world created; a simulation will only confuse matters.

1 MAKE SENSE: WILLIAM WAS BUILT FOR DOLORES

William may have been created for a very specific task, especially if Ford has anything to do with it. Maybe William's true purpose, as he puts it, is to help finish this game once and for all. That may mean killing off Dolores and completing the story.

While it's unknown which side of the story he will fall on, many people think that his ultimate role is to take out Dolores and finish off all this chaos. It seems like the narrative would therefore come full circle.
