10 How To Choose A Career? Don’t Be Like Marshall
One of the biggest subplots of the show has been Marshall's career; though he studied to become a lawyer, Marshall really wanted to work with the environment to make the world a better place. This is a really specific goal to have for someone who did not really enjoy the 'lawyer-ing' part so much. Being an environmental lawyer also has some corporate aspects which Marshall clearly detests.
He is of course, more suited to a flexible professional role which would have allowed him to be creative while making a substantial difference to the environment. It’s very important to research your potential job description before you take up a job, which Marshall never did.
9 Never Leap Like Marshall
Remember the episode in Season 4 when Marshall wanted to jump onto the roof of a neighboring building - for no definite purpose whatsoever? This incident made the fans realize all the meaningless, ritual-adjacent things which the gang often indulges which are often too risky. The leap was supposed to have metaphorical connotations since each of them has had a bad year and wanted to escape it but was nevertheless too dangerous.
The distance between the two apartments was quite a bit and if Marshall failed he would have dropped to his death! This wasn’t just a stupid idea but also promotes risky behavior among others.
8 Never Trust Some Random Person With Your Wedding Hair
Remember when Marshall let some random dude give him frosted tips right before his wedding? That was so entirely avoidable, just don’t let anyone mess with your hair on the day of your wedding! This was quite unbelievable because Marshall was kind of a groomzilla and there’s no way he would be this thoughtless.
To make things worse, he tried to fix the situation by shaving off a patch of his hair! Firstly, there are so many DIY kits which can fix the frosty hair situation, it’s hard to believe no one had access to hair color or hair dye.
7 Don’t Be a Weird Houseparty Guest like Marshall
Marshall and Lily despite all their collective cuteness make for really needy and cloying hosts, and there are actually a lot of lessons to be learned from their behavior. They even have a reputation of being clingy and often come off as too desperate to be liked.
So, when they invite Robin and Barney for a couple’s night Marshall and Lily think they have done a great job, Robin and Barney had a really bad time. This has actually happened a lot, especially when Marshall and Lily are working towards the same thing, they tend to lose touch with what other people might really want.
6 He Never Outgrew The Basic Jock In Him
Throughout HIMYM, Marshall has often exhibited behavior that reminded fans of his inner high school jock from their teenage days. Come to think of it, Marshall is just so used to being the proverbial ‘big dog’ or rather ‘big fudge’ that he gets away with quite a bit of quite toxic behavior.
Having said that he has often helped the men around him wake up to their toxic behavior and has helped them realize the futility of meaningless or shallow flings. But Marshall himself is still quite stuck in his teenage phase and it shows when he is judging Ted’s girlfriend or refusing to engage with someone who’s maybe well-read or more cultured than him.
5 Marshall Sings Way Too Much
There are some people who can get away with singing about their day, but Marshall is not one of them. In fact, a recurring joke in the show has been about how Marshall sings about everything he does from laundry to ordering delivery.
And while there’s much to be said about keeping everyone’s spirits up with music, Marshall is really not a good singer and his songwriting is quite lame most of the time. Moreover, his friends have often told him how they are not especially fond of his singing chops and yet he never seems to take the hint and continues to sing about random, run-off-the-mill things.
4 He Actually Judges People Based On Their Relationship With Star Wars
This is one of the best indicators of how Marshall never really evolved from his high school persona; every sophomore Star Wars fan makes friends based on how other people love Star Wars and that’s fine. But adults doing the same thing? That’s problematic in so many ways; it is quite literally a first world science fiction series that can never decide a person’s worth.
When Marshall learns that Ted’s girlfriend Stella has never seen Star Wars which happens to be Ted’s favorite franchise he actually tells him that they probably won’t be compatible. That’s not just really bad advice but also quite childish and inane.
3 Marshall Is Ridiculously Superstitious
Although almost every adult leans into superstitions now and then, Marshall’s superstitions are on a whole new level. Not only does he believe in Sasquatch and BigFoot, he is also really finicky about any random occurrence. For a well-adjusted adult to actually be that invested in self-made superstitions is a bit extreme.
Like that time when Ted and Barney actually poked fun at his superstitious nature by daring God to strike him down that very night before he could write a letter to Lily. Marshall actually falls for that and knocks on wood, throws salt over his shoulder and spins around three times!
2 The Slap Bet Was Ridiculous
The infamous slap bet from HIMYM should really teach you never to conduct pointless, anxiety-fueling bets against your friends. The slap bat doesn’t just condone violence but also has no point. The entire thing was obviously Marshall’s idea - it started with a three-slap policy but quickly grew into something bigger.
Lily gives Marshall the right to slap Barney either ten times consecutively or five times throughout his lifetime and Barney has to choose between the two. Barney chooses the latter which leads to him living in fear throughout his life wondering when the next slap would come.
