Iconic Parks and Recreation duo Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) reunite in a true Leslie way by adhering to the rules of social distancing. Even though the hit sitcom ended in 2015 after 7 seasons, the series is airing a reunion special on April 30th. NBCUniversal has been hit hard during the pandemic after having to suspend 35 of its productions and postpone the launch of several originals on its streaming platform Peacock to 2021. However, this reunion episode will allow the network to release new content.
Parks and Rec was created by Greg Daniels and the mastermind behind The Office, Brooklyn 99 and The Good Place, Michael Schur, and first aired in 2009. While the series had a notoriously rough first season, it quickly grew a dedicated fanbase following season 2. The workplace comedy stars a hardworking people-pleaser Leslie Knope who is passionate about her job as a Deputy Director of the Parks and Recreation Department for middle-of-nowhere Pawnee, Indiana. She motives her quirky team, including true outdoors man Ron Swanson, outgoing Tom Havorford, confident Donna, quriky April, and lovable dope Andy to work hard at improving their community.
NBC uploaded a video on YouTube starring the show's favorite unlikely duo, Leslie and Ron, in order to promote Parks and Rec's upcoming reunion episode. Leslie checks in via video chat on her good pal Ron who is up at his cabin "hunting meat" in order to avoid the grocery stores. He offers to send Leslie some of the 12 year supply of venison jerky he has acquired over the course of quarantine. Refuting the offer, she asks Ron if he has been following the rules of social distancing in her true law-abiding fashion. He explains that being not much of a people person and having practiced "avoiding people since I was 4," he has had no problems adhering to the guidelines.
The reunion special features Leslie Knope responding to quarantine exactly how fans expect she would. She is determined to reach out to and reconnect all of her friends and work colleagues in a socially distant manner. In addition to Poehler and Offerman, original cast members Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, Jim O’Heir, and Retta are all set to return for the reunion episode. Schur also hinted there may be some special guest appearances. Not only is Parks and Rec tackling a relevant topic, the episode will also benefit Feeding America.
This Parks and Rec reunion episode couldn't be coming at a more important time. Fans will be able to not only relish in nostalgia for their favorite characters, but witness and relate to how they handle the obstacles of this pandemic. NBC and Schur were also wise in selecting Parks and Recreation for a pandemic-related reunion special. Leslie Knope is an incredible role model and will help promote the importance of the safety practices put in place, in addition to providing an evening of laughter. Fans can catch the reunion Thursday, April 30th at on NBC at 8:30 PM/EST.
