The winner of Season 9 of RuPaul's Drag Race, Sasha Velour, is getting her own show titled Nightgowns. The eight-part docu-series will premiere this Monday, April 6, as part of the launch of the streaming platform Quibi.
Nightgowns will follow Sasha Velour as she turns her monthly Brooklyn live show into a full world tour. The RuPaul's Drag Race winner has always been a champion of the unusual and her show is meant to showcase the underground drag scene that does not often get represented in mainstream media. Velour is one of the most iconic queens from Drag Race, because of her atypical style and intellect. She is the perfect candidate for a docu-series on the evolution of drag.
According to EW, the series will feature performers from the Nightgowns live show including Untitled Queen, Vander Von Odd, Neon Calypso, Sasha Colby, K.James and Miss Malice. Each episode of the Quibi docu-series will be hosted by Sasha Velour and will feature a different drag artist from the Brooklyn scene. Sasha Velour says, "We're transforming the system that doesn't work for us." She is an innovator, an activist and an outspoken fighter for marginalized groups. This kind of passion fuels her drag. "We're not interested in the world as it is. We're interested in the world as it could be", she proclaims in the Quibi trailer.
Velour stood out on Drag Race for approaching the art form in a totally unique way. In a particularly memorable episode, she clapped back at Todrick Hall that she was not a "that kind of drag queen" after he gave her a note about her performance. Once Sasha Velour expressed her concern that the television show would not appreciate her artistic style, she started to overcome that fear and eventually won the grand prize. She is a very particular artist with a very specific vision. An unidentified voice in the trailer highlights that these qualities are the reasons for her worldwide success.
Sasha Velour's mission statement seems to be to change the world through artistic drag. Expect to see several different types of drag performers and styles that most audiences have never encountered before. As the trailer states, she is creating her own universe. Her drag show is not a race to the crown. It is a world in which anyone can build their own crown and wear it proudly. That very verse she sparred with Todrick Hall about announces, "If you want to join the revolution, innovate that's my solution." Watch her perform that proclamation here.
