2014 was a big year for action movies, with film studios releasing a good few pictures that audiences instantly fell in love with. From animation to sci-fi and everything in between, 2014 proved to be a memorable year for action fans. With that in mind, here are ten of the best action films to be released in 2014.

10 John Wick

John Wick follows a retired assassin who takes up his arms again to get revenge on the son of a mob boss. As he pursues his target, John finds himself drawn further and further back into the life he once left behind.

With its impressive fight scenes and compelling world, John Wick became a surprise hit. Its beautiful cinematography and skillful stunt work made it an adrenaline-filled ride that action fans found so rewarding that it kickstarted a new franchise.

9 Big Hero 6

An animated adaptation of an obscure Marvel comic, Big Hero 6 tells the origin story of a group of young superheroes. Their leader is Hiro, a teen genius who discovers that some tech he invented is being used by a mysterious villain for sinister ends. Together with his new team, he must discover and foil the villainous plot.

Featuring Disney's signature quality animation, lovable characters, and a story with heart, Big Hero 6 proved to be another success for the studio. Despite being somewhat overlooked in subsequent years, Big Hero 6 is just as satisfying as the other action films to come out that year.

8 Edge Of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise as a soldier forced to relive the same battle over and over again after he is accidentally exposed to an alien substance. He discovers another soldier is experiencing the same phenomenon and so they work together to not only win the battle, but also the war.

Edge of Tomorrow initially bombed at the box office, prompting the studio to change the title to Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow for the home media release. The film has since gained a following of devoted fans. This is unsurprising since the film boasts impressive visuals and characters who are easy to cheer for, amounting to one of the most fun films to be released in 2014.

7 X-Men: Days Of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past finds the X-Men in a future where they are being hunted down and killed by Sentinels. In order to save all mutants, Professor X and Magneto hatch a plan to send Wolverine back in time to prevent the creation of the Sentinels.

With its effective use of time travel to allow prominent X-Men stars to share the screen together, Days of Future Past turned out to be one of the most satisfying films in the franchise. Featuring some of the most exciting action sequences in the series, Days of Future Past holds up not only as a solid X-Men movie but also as a good action movie.

6 Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier follows Captain America as he works for SHIELD. All is well until SHIELD director Nick Fury is assassinated and Cap suddenly finds himself unable to trust anyone.

The Winter Soldier surprised Marvel fans with a suspenseful adventure. The tense action scenes and cloak and dagger storyline made it a new favorite for franchise fans. The character work the film does for Captain America made him a more beloved character and only served to make it an even more rewarding experience.

5 How To Train Your Dragon 2

How to Train Your Dragon 2 continues the story of Hiccup and his dragon Toothless as they explore new territory. Things are no longer fun and games, however, when they discover a cave filled with dragons and a secret that will draw them into a great conflict.

A sequel that lived up to its predecessor, How to Train Your Dragon 2 impressed audiences with its gorgeously animated return to the fictional world of Berk. While the action scenes are breathtaking, it is the further development of the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless that gives the story its punch and is the reason to watch this film.

4 The Guest

The Guest follows a family who welcomes a mysterious houseguest into their home. He claims to be an old army buddy of their son, but a series of suspicious deaths start to point toward him not being who he says he is.

Dan Stevens delivers a dynamic performance (pardon the alliteration) as the titular guest. Between his presence, the gripping action sequences, and the tense narrative, The Guest becomes an incredible thrill ride that still impresses just as it did for audiences in 2014.

3 The Raid 2

The Raid 2 is an Indonesian action film about a police officer named Rama who, after the events of the previous film, finds himself going deeper into the criminal underworld. He is tasked with going undercover in order to figure out the identities of the corrupt politicians and officers who are aiding the city's criminals.

With Gareth Evans, who directed the first movie, returning to writing and directing duties, The Raid 2 provides a satisfying follow-up adventure. Featuring beautifully executed action set pieces that rival those found in the original and a gripping story, The Raid 2 offers fans everything they loved about The Raid: Redemption and more.

2 Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

In this follow-up to the 2011 reboot, ape leader Caesar is trying to build a good life for his new family. But when humans wander into the apes' territory, tensions begin to arise between man and ape as well as between ape and ape. If an all-out war is to be avoided, Caesar must navigate the situation carefully and find a peaceful solution.

With Andy Serkis leading the cast with a powerful performance as Caesar and visual spectacle that outshines its predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes proves itself to be a satisfying middle chapter in the new Planet of the Apes trilogy.

1 Guardians Of The Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy saw the Marvel Cinematic Universe make its first venture in space as Peter Quill steals and subsequently tries to sell an artifact. When he discovers the true nature of the artifact, however, he (begrudgingly) assembles a team to keep a fanatical alien from using it to wipe out an entire planet's population.

Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise hit for Marvel, and rightfully so. Featuring colorful characters, a clever wit, and a story with heart, it turned out to be one of the most fun movies that MCU fans have ever been treated to.
