The 10 Most Underrated Scream Queens in Horror History

A Scream Queen is an actress who is known for her work in the horror genre, whether it be a starring role, like Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, a highly memorable appearance, like Jada Pinkett Smith in Scream 2, or even an actress who has numerous roles in horror films, like Danielle Harris.

Unfortunately, not every Queen gets her fair share of glory. Some have been egregiously overlooked, and it's a downright shame. Below are the 10 most underrated Scream Queens in horror history.

10 Jessica Biel

Aside from her roles in The Tall Man, and a few semi-horror films, like Blade: Trinity, Jessica Biel is best known for starring in the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Though the movie didn't do well critically, it was a huge box-office success, gaining over $100 million in ticket sales. Biel's performance was praised, and audiences found the film to be genuinely scary, authentic, and suspenseful. Its success went on to pave the way for three more films, and another that is currently in pre-production.

9 Loretta Devine

Loretta Devine is a highly accomplished actress and singer, but to horror fans, she's best known for Urban Legend and its sequel, Urban Legends: Final Cut, where she plays the campus security guard who ends up saving the day.

The movies center around a serial killer whose MO is to kill people in the style of famous urban legends, like the killer in the backseat, the boyfriend hanging from a tree, flashing your headlights, drinking soda and Pop Rocks, and more.

8 Drew Barrymore

Sure, Drew Barrymore was only in Scream for around 12 minutes. But those 12 minutes have been some of the most influential in the entire history of film. Not only is it one of the scariest scenes in horror history, but that scene alone almost single-handedly created the '90s horror renaissance. In fact, when most people remember Scream, the opening scene is the first thing that comes to mind. Some even argue that Barrymore was the true star of the movie.

7 Lili Taylor

Lli Taylor has never gotten her proper praise as an actress, especially in the horror genre. Not only did she star in the TV show Hemlock Grove, and was nominated for an Emmy for her appearance on the X-Files, but she also starred in the '90s remake of The Haunting, the Netflix film Eli, and the Texas Chainsaw prequel, Leatherface, as well as the insanely popular movie, The Conjuring. Maybe it's because Taylor was never your typical Queen. She was never playing a high school girl in a short skirt, but the fact is this - Taylor knows how to deliver great performances and carry a film.

6 Ali Larter

Ali Larter is another Scream Queen who has almost single-handedly carried the genre throughout the decades, and yet, still remains relatively unknown. She starred in the '90s remake of House on Haunted Hill, as well as Final Destination, Final Destination 2, and three of the Resident Evil films.

Larter's total box office gross for her horror films alone is over $1 billion. On top of this, Larter has also starred in thrillers and suspense films like Obsessed, with Beyoncé and Idris Alba.

5 Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez is certainly an A-List celebrity, but she has never been fully recognized for her work in the horror genre. The reality is that Lopez has starred in many horror films that have gone on to be blockbuster hits, like Anaconda and The Boy Next Door. She also starred in the serial killer film, The Cell, which was a hit upon release, and throughout the years has become even more popular and beloved by horror fans for its unique cinematography, elaborate costumes, and unsettling gore.

4 Jodie Foster

Despite the fact that The Silence of the Lambs went on to be a huge hit, spawn sequels, and win five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress, Jodie Foster has never been seen as a Scream Queen. In the film, she's after the notorious killer, Buffalo Bill.

To gather more information about how he behaves, she's tasked with interviewing imprisoned murderer Hannibal Lector, but Hannibal has a plan of his own. The movie was groundbreaking and ended up becoming the paramount performance of Foster's career.

3 Eliza Dushku

From her role on Buffy to numerous horror films like Soul Survivors, Open Graves, and The Alphabet Killer, Dushku is certainly known to horror fans, but she's never been fully seen as a Scream Queen. However, that's starting to change, especially since her 2003 film Wrong Turn has gained popularity over the last few years. The movie, about a group of friends battling inbred cannibals in the woods, was a mild success when it was released. But through the years it's gone on to produce five sequels, and a planned reboot that's in the works. As the legacy of the film grows, Dushku is finally becoming more recognized as a horror legend.

2 Meagan Good

Meagan Good has starred in a handful of theatrically released horror films in the last 15 years. They include One Missed Call, The Unborn, Saw V, and The Intruder, so it's shocking that Good hasn't gained a reputation as one of horror's reigning Scream Queens.

However, Good is set to the star in the highly-anticipated Monster Hunter, alongside Milla Jovovich and T.I., which is expected to be a massive hit. Hopefully, Good's legacy as a horror icon can be cemented once and for all.

1 Anna Faris

While the Scary Movie franchise might not technically be horror, it plays an important role in the genre. The film is both a parody and homage to the genre, and helps keep the fanfare alive. On top of that, there are lots of people who got into the horror genre after watching Scary Movie. They saw the references and then wanted to know what they meant. So, Faris deserves her title for helping promote the genre while creating some hilarious movies in the process.
