Charlie Cox Thinks Marvel Will Recast Daredevil In The MCU

When Daredevil inevitably makes his triumphant return to Marvel - and it's a matter of when not if - Charlie Cox does not believe he will be in the role. The character hasn't been seen since Netflix's Daredevil went off the air back in 2018, part of the discontinuation of Disney content on the streaming service. Marvel rarely shelves any of their core comic characters for long, so there's likely a plan in place for Daredevil to pop up in the MCU in the near future.

In the eyes of many new Marvel fans, Cox is the true Daredevil. He played Matt Murdock for three seasons on the Netflix series, in addition to playing the superhero in The Defenders crossover. Daredevil was the first Marvel series to air on Netflix, eventually followed by five others. Each season was met with critical acclaim, with two of the show's three seasons reaching at least a 97 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If it weren't for the political studio machinations behind the scenes, the series would likely still be preparing for a new season.

Instead, the series is gone, perhaps along with Cox's portrayal. In comments made to ComicBook.com, Cox suggested Marvel would look to recast Daredevil in the future, along with the other central characters of the story. Cox even thinks it might be better if the main characters are recast, citing the difficulty of bringing the cast of the Netflix show back together because of everyone's different schedules.

It's not unprecedented for this particular superhero to go through an actor shuffle. Back before the MCU existed, Daredevil was played by Ben Affleck in a movie that only garnered mixed reviews. Recasting superheroes within the MCU is uncommon, although there have been several actors who have portrayed Howard Stark, mostly due to the character's varying age in different films. Spider-Man has also been played recently by many different actors, though in the live-action MCU, it's been limited to Tom Holland so far.

Still, seeing another actor play Daredevil so soon after the Netflix show's cancellation will be a bitter pill to swallow. Not only is Cox most identified with the character and vice versa, but he clearly wasn't ready to be done with Daredevil either. He was devastated by the show's cancellation and even signed a petition to bring the show back. The MCU may try to recast Daredevil soon, but it will be a long time before people forget Charlie Cox's version of the character.
