The Vampire Diaries: 5 Reasons Why Elena Was Better As A Vampire (& 5 Why She Was Worse)

Elena Gilbert was a polarizing protagonist on The Vampire Diaries who only became more divisive after transforming into a vampire. Many of the doppelganger's human characteristics were grossly exaggerated after her transition, while core traits, such as her caring nature and selfless attitude, were lost altogether. However, there's no denying that Elena's transition was a refreshing reinvention for her character.

Overall the doppelganger's undead status was an improvement in many ways — but still a deterioration in others.

10 Better: A Stronger, Faster Fighter

Elena becomes much stronger and faster after transitioning to a vampire in Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries. After her transformation, her previous combat training with Alaric pays off and she manages to overpower older vampires like Caroline.

It is refreshing to see Elena feature in fight sequences more after three seasons of human fragility. More action scenes were included in the show following Elena's transition, with her character often at the forefront.

9 Worse: Magnified Selfishness

Intensified emotions and characteristics are one of the detracting side effects of becoming a vampire. Elena displayed selfish tendencies periodically as a human and these traits are magnified after her transition.

As a vampire, Elena is consistently self-centered. She is oblivious to Bonnie's death and Stefan's disappearance in Season 5; even Caroline calls out her friend for her selfish behavior in Season 6 while her humanity is turned off.

8 Better: No Longer A Damsel In Distress

Elena was physically weaker as a human and often occupied the role of damsel in distress. Powerless against super-strong vampires and werewolves, the doppelganger relied on the Salvatore brothers and her best friends to save her.

Although Elena isn't as strong as older vampires like Stefan and Damon, she is less vulnerable after her transition. The doppelganger is capable of saving herself instead of relying on the men in her life.

7 Worse: Obsessed With The Cure

When Caroline becomes a vampire in Season 2, she has no choice but to adjust to her transition. When Elena becomes a vampire, however, the entire Mystic Falls gang devote themselves to finding the cure as the doppelganger refuses to accept her new undead status.

Bonnie utilizes dark magic to try and bring Elena back during her transition. When this fails, the group pursues the cure for immortality despite being warned about the danger of awakening Silas.

6 Better: Relationship With Damon

Elena's romance with the older Salvatore brother intensifies after she becomes a vampire. The vampires finally get together in Season 4 after three seasons of teasing their relationship.

Delena fans rejoiced when Elena gave into her passionate feelings for. The couple's love survives the odds as they come back to each other in the series finale for an endgame reunion.

5 Worse: Breaking Up With Stefan

As Elena's relationship with Damon blossoms, her epic romance with Stefan withers. Stefan stands by Elena after she becomes a vampire, but the doppelganger's sire bond to his brother drives the young lovers apart.

Stelena fans were dismayed to see the iconic couple drift away from each other. Elena's transformation ultimately destroyed their relationship as it magnified her feelings for Damon.

4 Better: A More Complex Personality

Elena could often be dull as a human, but her personality becomes more complex after her transition. Her intensified emotions lead to dramatic encounters with the Salvatores as her character is completely reinvented.

Although Elena isn't always likable, she is more emotionally layered as a vampire. Many of her previous characteristics are intensified while others completely disappear.

3 Worse: Less Compassionate

One of Elena's personality traits that vanishes after her transition is her compassion. Characters like Elijah compliment Elena's caring nature as a human, but her empathy disappears when she becomes a vampire.

Elena helps Jeremy kill Kol Mikaelson in her quest for the cure. She shows no remorse for the thousands of vampires in Kol's sire line who perished with the Original, caring only about obtaining the cure and becoming human again.

2 Better: Elena Vs. Katherine

Katherine and Elena face off in the thrilling Season 4 finale. Their battle is the culmination of a bitter rivalry that ends with Elena forcing the older vampire to take the cure.

Elena is considerably weaker as a younger vampire, though she still stands her ground against Katherine. Had Elena remained human, then her epic confrontation with her evil doppelganger would never have come to fruition.

1 Worse: Hurt Her Friends

Jeremy's death in Season 4 pushes Elena over the edge. The newly turned vampire switches off her humanity and becomes a ruthless, remorseless shell of her former self. The emotionless vampire terrorizes the town and attempts to kill Bonnie and Caroline.

Both characters have a near-brush experience with death because of Elena, who almost destroys the Mystic Falls gang. Thankfully, Caroline is saved by Stefan and Bonnie repels Elena's attack with her magic, and the friends ultimately reunite to heal the rift between them.
