The King Of Fighters Allstar mobile game is getting a crossover with the most unlikely of sources this year in a new collaboration with WWE. Released in English regions last year, Allstar features pugilists from all throughout SNK’s long-running King Of Fighters series as they engage in side-scrolling beat-em-up combat alongside a number of special guests, be they fellow video game characters or from another medium altogether.
Indeed, King Of Fighters Allstar has already featured a number of crossovers, with guest appearances from both Tekken and Samurai Shodown in addition to characters from the Hideaki Sorachi-written manga Gin Tama. This is on top of King Of Fighters characters appearing in other companies’ titles over the years, such as series mainstay Terry Bogard’s stint as a guest fighter in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, several cast members being featured in the 2010 PlayStation Portable title Neo Geo Heroes: Ultimate Shooting, and an entire crossover series with Capcom as part of the latter’s Vs. franchise.
Now, it appears that the warriors of King Of Fighters Allstar will be facing off against the superstars of the WWE, as announced on the game’s Twitter page earlier today. This post features a new logo for the planned collaboration, titled King Of Fighters Allstar X WWE, and although no particular superstars have been named to appear yet, one of the hashtags included in the announcement contains one of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson’s famous catchphrases, implying that at the very least the former multi-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion-turned-Fast and Furious star might be involved.
WWE has currently been re-evaluating its video game strategy in the wake of the disaster that was WWE 2K20, canceling this year’s planned sequel and announcing the radically different WWE 2K Battlegrounds to be released in its stead. Furthermore, this planned collaboration with King Of Fighters Allstar will be the company’s second video game crossover, as the likes of John Cena, The Rock, Xavier Woods, and Becky Lynch have appeared as guest characters in the Smash Bros-style free-to-play fighter Brawlhalla last year.
Still, it’s surprising that it took this long for WWE to cross over with a bigger-name fighting game franchise like King Of Fighters, given that the company shares with the genre a penchant for seemingly impossible combat and over the top characters. Now they will have the chance to do exactly that with King Of Fighters Allstar X WWE, as players will see the worlds of the arcade and the Squared Circle collide on their mobile devices sometime in the near future.
