Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kim Kardashian is known for her unnatural good looks. People have debated whether her curves are naturally occurring for years. It has been proven, though, that Kim K’s good looks are enhanced by Photoshop.
It’s widely known how Kim enhances certain parts of her body with telltale signs like curved lines in the background. But Kim’s editing doesn’t stop there, on multiple occasions, she has edited the appearance of her children. Understandably, people are even more outraged when Kim does this. Enhancing your own photos through various photoshop apps creates unrealistic beauty standards for the general populous but, editing your child’s photos sends the message they aren’t beautiful enough just the way they are. Young children don’t have the mental capacity to understand unrealistic beauty standards.
The instances in which Kim has been caught editing her children’s photos are not as numerous as the times where she has edited her own photos but you can catch them all below.
This is probably the least egregious example. Kim simply cropped North into this family photo for their 2019 Christmas card. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Kim explained how difficult it was to get her four children, 6-year-old North West, 4-year-old Saint West, 2-year-old Chicago West, and 1-year-old Psalm West, in a room together for a single photo.
In this particular instance, North refused to smile and cried the whole time because her hair wasn’t styled the way she wanted. To solve this problem, Kim just took a photo of North alone and cropped it into the family photo. Kim (or her photo editor, for that matter) seemingly cropped North in perfectly. If only North appeared like she naturally belonged in the photo. Kim’s other children all have natural looks on their faces but North’s face is cocked slightly to the right with a blank smile off into the distance. It suffices to say, North is comically out of place but, at least Kim hasn’t appeared to edit North’s appearance or any of her other children for that matter.
This Photoshop job was more than obvious. As Kim says in her caption, Chicago was afraid of the larger Dino costume Kanye was dressed in. So as Kim did in the previous photo, the photo editor simply cropped Chicago into the family photo. There's nothing wrong with using a little Photoshop to fit the whole family into your photos but Kim's photo manipulation doesn't stop there.
Kim K posted this screen grab from an episode of Keeping Up With Kardashians of her and son, Saint West on March 21, 2020. At first glance, the post seems harmless. There’s clearly a sepia-tinted filter with some added grain but how’s that misleading? It’s nothing more than your typical Photoshop aesthetic improvements. As you can see from the rest of Kim’s feed, her 90s aesthetic is everything.
In this case, the devil is in the details. Once you take a closer look, you can see the subtle, yet telltale signs of Facetune. Saint’s face is smoothed and his eyes are brightened. If you’ve ever seen a babyface, you’ll know they’re more textured than Saint’s face appears in this photo. As for the eyes, even if they caught the light just right, they’re a little too bright for comfort.
For comparison, check out Kim’s post with Saint on August 26, 2019. It’s similarly grainy but Saint’s eyes are much dimmer. There are noticeable creases under his eyes and below his chin. You can also take a look at another photo featuring North and Saint. Saint’s chin and cheeks are noticeably chubbier, as most babyfaces are. The added grain in this photo helps to conceal any obvious signs of manipulation. Some of these differences can be attributed to the angle of the photo but a tad bit of Facetune was also used to edit this screen grab.
Thanks to Kim’s baby sister Kylie Jenner, this photoshop job is more apparent. Kim reposted this photo which was originally posted by Kylie in September. Kylie also photoshops her own photos and has occasionally photoshopped pictures with her daughter, Stormi Webster. In this picture, Stormi and Kim’s daughter, Chicago West, are cuddling in pink onesies.
When you compare the two pictures, Kylie’s is notably brighter. The colors in Kim’s are more muted to fit in with the aesthetic of her feed. When you take a closer look, you’ll notice Kim has pulled in her daughter’s forehead a tad bit. She also appears to have smoothed out the baby hairs on Chicago’s hairline. Many in the comments were outraged at the Photoshop fail. They accused Kim of instilling unrealistic beauty standards on her infant child.
The comparisons on the second and third slides of this compilation courtesy of @Celebface might well be one of Kim’s most famous photoshop fails. The picture is two years old yet, for many, it’s still the first child Photoshop mishap that comes to mind. Kim reposted this image after she found it on a fan account. After heavy backlash, a source claimed any edits made to the original photo were made by the fan account who originally posted the photo. This claim can be called into question because of the apparent discrepancies between the two images.
With the original picture, the neon greens North and Saint are wearing are much brighter. The muted tones in Kim’s edit fit in with the desaturated aesthetic of her feed and draws more attention to the beige bikini she’s wearing. But, this is not the only edit Kim made. Before and after comparisons show North’s stomach is pulled in to make her appear skinnier. Understandably, fans were outraged at this edit. It’s one thing to pull your own stomach in but altering the shape of your five-year-old child seems to be a step too far.
Kim is no stranger to adultifying her children, especially North. On multiple occasions, she has let North wear makeup and large hoop earrings. After Kim’s husband, Kanye West, ventured more into his spirituality, he found a problem with continuing to adultify his daughters. Kanye has said he no longer is comfortable with North wearing slip dresses and makeup in public. Fans can only wonder what Kanye thinks of Kim photoshopping North to look skinnier.
