New Marvel fan art imagines what it would look like if Captain America star Chris Evans played Spider-Man instead of Tom Holland. Evans' performance as Steve Rogers/Captain America is a fan favorite, and he played a huge role in crafting the Marvel Cinematic Universe as fans know it. He's played the character in several MCU movies over the years, most recently in Avengers: Endgame. Unfortunately, Steve's story came to an end there, as he traveled back in time to live out his life, making him an old man in the present. Captain America will live on, though, as Steve passed his shield onto his friend Sam Wilson/Falcon. For his part, Evans recently revealed he's quite sure his time as Captain America is over, explaining, "it would be risky to revisit it in my opinion."
Meanwhile, the MCU's Spider-Man is played by Tom Holland, who first appeared in Captain America: Civil War. His take on Peter Parker has been both a critical and commercial success, with his third solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming 3, on the way next year. Spider-Man has been a hot topic for Marvel fans, especially in the last year. For awhile, thanks to a breakdown between Marvel and Sony, it looked like Spider-Man's journey in the MCU was over. Luckily, the two companies were able to reach an agreement, meaning Holland will appear in at least one more MCU movie.
Although Holland will hang onto the role of Spider-Man for now, new fan art imagines what it would look like if Evans took over. The art is inspired by Evans' recent reveal that his childhood hero was Spider-Man. However, as the artist, ultraraw26, mentions in their caption, he said he wouldn't have liked to wear Spider-Man's mask. The art reflects this, with Evans in the Spider-Man costume, minus the mask. Check it out below:
The artist also shared theories on how Chris Evans could potentially play Spider-Man, including as an older version of Peter Parker or in Marvel's upcoming What If...? animated series. What If...? will explore alternate storylines in the MCU, such as Peggy Carter becoming Captain America instead of Steve Rogers. Though other stories aren't confirmed at this point, fans would certainly enjoy seeing Evans' take on Spider-Man in a What If...? episode.
Evans is past the point where he could feasibly play a Spider-Man origin story in live-action. However, that's what makes the What If...? series so interesting. Since it's animated, those behind the show won't have to worry as much about actors' ages and what makes logical sense. Unfortunately, What If...? won't come out on Disney+ until next year, but until then, fans have this art to help them imagine what it would looked like if Evans played Spider-Man.
