In the first episode of the season, we see Melisandre preparing for bed. She undresses, then removes the jewel around her neck. Suddenly, her youthful beauty is gone and she is revealed to be an old and feeble woman.

9 The Hound Returns

Last time Sandor Clegane, aka the Hound, was seen was after he fought Brienne of Tarth, and Arya left him for dead. Though he is never seen actually dying, it was still a shock when he reappeared late in Season 6 on his own path of redemption.

The Hound is seen helping a man named Brother Ray build a sept out in the country. He is still filled with rage yet sees a purpose in how to direct that anger toward helping people rather than hurting them. It is a welcome return for a fan-favorite character.

8 Daenerys Burns The Khals

After developing herself into a powerful ruler, Season 6 finds Daenerys in a rare position of vulnerability. Upon flying away from Meereen with Drogon, she is found and taken captive by a Dothraki army.

She is brought to the council of Khals where she faces a lifetime of living in Vaes Dothrak along with the other widows. However, Daenerys shows she is still in control. With all the Khals trapped inside a tent, Daenerys burns the whole things down before emerging from the flames as the new leader of the Dothraki.

7 Jon's Resurrection

Season 5 ended with Jon Snow getting murdered by a group of his fellow Night's Watch brethren. It was a shocking moment that left fans speculating throughout the year-long hiatus.

The show was determined to make the viewers believe that Jon was truly gone, but then in the second season, Davos asks Melisandre to use her power to resurrect him. After a long and suspenseful sequence, Jon opens his eyes and gasps for air. Though not everyone was impressed, it became one of the show's most famous moments.

5 Arya Kills Walder Frey

Arya's escapades in Braavos didn't make for a popular storyline in the last few seasons, but she did get a crowd-pleasing moment in Season 6's final moments.

The scene finds Walder Frey, the man behind the Red Wedding, enjoying his meat pie while harassing a servant. He asks for her to go get his sons but she explains that they already hear, indicating the pie he is eating is made of his own children. The servant then removes her face to reveal Arya, who proceeds to cut Walder's throat.

4 Jon's Parentage Revealed

The truth behind Jon Snow's mother has been a mystery since the beginning of the series. While there was plenty of speculation, the final reveal was done in such an effective way, it likely impacted even those fans who had guessed the truth years earlier.

Bran looks back on a memory of his young father attempting to rescue his sister Lyanna from the Tower of Joy. Instead, he finds her dying in the midst of childbirth and asking Ned to protect her infant son, whom Ned raises as his own.

3 Ramsay Is Fed To His Hounds

Though he had a lot of competition, Ramsay Bolton is likely the most hated villain the show has ever produced. Given his many sadistic acts against beloved characters, everyone was longing for the day he got his comeuppance.

Following the Battle of the Bastards, that moment finally comes. Ramsay is tied up inside of a cage, yet he still continues to taunt Sansa. The taunting turns to fear when his hungry dogs emerge and start feasting on their former master in a death filled with poetic justice.

2 Cersei Burns The Sept

Cersei Lannister is someone who usually seemed to be in total control, but with the High Sparrow taking control of King's Landing, she was looked to be defeated. She had been humiliated, lost most of her allies, and was about to face trial.

However, she proved that it is deadly to ever underestimate a Lannister. As all her enemies were gathered in the Sept of Baelor, waiting for her, Cersei ignited the cache of wildfire hidden underneath and exploded the entire sept, thus installing herself as queen.

1 The Battle Of The Bastards

No series had better illustrated the kind of cinematic storytelling that could be accomplished on television than Game of Thrones. But in Season 6, the show outdid itself with its biggest battle sequence yet.

Jon Snow led his small army against Ramsay Bolton and the army of Winterfell. Taken as a whole, the battle features several moments that are iconic on their own. From Jon's epic standoff with a cavalry charge to the stunning one-shot sequence to the anxiety-inducing trampling sequence, it was a stunning achievement.
