The Green Lantern Hal Jordan has been through a lot in his time as an interstellar cop, and that includes coming back from the dead. Now, it seems like Green Lantern will have to die all over again.
The DC solicitations for September 2020 tease the upcoming Green Lantern Season Two #7, written by Grant Morrison, where Hal will face the judgement of the Young Guardians after seemingly perishing during the war with the Anti-Matter Lanterns. The Anti-Matter Lanterns hail from the Anti-Matter Universe, the source of many problems for the Green Lanterns and the larger DC universe. Much as the Anti-Monitor is the evil counterpart of the Monitor, the villainous Anti-Matter Lanterns are doppelgängers for the heroic Green Lanterns. The issue will reportedly provide a recap to catch readers up and prepare everyone for the upcoming battle.
Interestingly, the cover image shows Hal Jordan as The Spectre, a role he has not filled since before the Rebirth storyline. When Coast City was destroyed by Mongul in the Reign of the Supermen! back in in 1993, Hal lost everyone he loved. Grief drove him mad, and turned him into the villain (a story later seen play out with Superman in the Injustice series). Hal absorbed the energy of the Central Power Battery - the source of power for the entire Green Lantern Corps - and became a villain called Parallax, going against the Guardians and the Justice League in the process. However, Hal later redeemed himself by sacrificing his life to save the galaxy in Final Night, and subsequently became The Spectre in the Day of Judgement mini-series before being brought back to life in Green Lantern: Rebirth.
During his tenure as The Spectre, Hal changed the spirit’s mission from one of wrath to one of redemption, which made sense, given that he had a lot to atone for. It is unclear if this image of Hal as The Spectre is merely part of the recap portion of the issue, or if Hal will once again become its host... but either way, it's certainly intriguing.
