Why Linda Hamilton Left The Beauty And The Beast Series

Here's why Linda Hamilton departed the hit CBS adaptation of Beauty And The Beast. Ron Perlman is an actor with well over 200 credits to his name, including an acclaimed run on TV series Sons Of Anarchy. He's had to endure tons of makeup throughout his career too, in the likes of The Island Of Dr. Moreau and his two movie stint as Hellboy. The latter character is arguably his most famous role, but his biggest makeup endurance test had to be CBS' Beauty And The Beast series.

This adaptation of the classic fairy tale debuted in 1987 and Perlman as the man-beast Vincent and Linda Hamilton as Catherine. Vincent saves Catherine after she's left for dead following a brutal attack, and the two later form a romantic attachment; Vincent is also able to sense whenever she's in danger. This take on Beauty And The Beast reveals a community of so-called outcasts like Vincent living below the streets of New York, and it did quite well in the ratings during its first two seasons. Game Of Thrones author George R.R. Martin also wrote on the series.

There was no real behind-the-scenes drama when it came to Linda Hamilton's decision to exit Beauty And The Beast. The actress became pregnant with her first child before production and decided the time was right to leave, so in the season 3 premiere episode "Though Lovers Be Lost...," Catherine is kidnapped by a new villain named Gabriel (Stephen McHattie) after she learns she's pregnant with Vincent's child.

The episode jumps ahead in time, with Vincent finally tracking Catherine down after she's given birth. Gabriel gave her a fatal overdose, so the two share a tearful goodbye before she dies. The crux of Beauty And The Beast season 3 had Vincent chasing after Gabriel to find his and Catherine's son, with help from a cop played by Jo Anderson. The loss of the central relationship caused fans to tune out rapidly, however, and season 3 proved to be the final series.

The series received a reboot in the form of The CW's Beauty & The Beast, starring Jay Ryan and Kristin Kreuk. This new iteration lasted for four seasons but didn't attract the same cult following as the 1987 show. After leaving the series, Linda Hamilton's next big role - and arguably her defining performance - came when she reprised the role of Sarah Connor for Terminator 2: Judgment Day; she most recently played the character again for 2019's Terminator: Dark Fate.
