Pennyworth: 5 Perfect Fan Theories About Season 2 (& 5 Hilariously Bad Ones)

Whether or not fans wanted an origin story for Batman's butler, they got one, as Pennyworth proved to be a fun and lively addition to the Batman canon. By positioning Alfred Pennyworth as a smooth-talking mercenary in an alternative version of London in the 1960s, the series was able to keep the narrative moving along without any concrete ties to the Dark Knight's mythos.

A young and battle-hardened Alfred took on the Raven Society and the No Name League, suffered great personal tragedy, and formed important relationships with Thomas Wayne and Martha Kane. The next season, which will premiere on EPIX, could see Alfred undertaking any number of dangerous jobs as he edges closer to becoming the Wayne family valet. Here are the most apt — and most absolutely ridiculous — theories for Season 2.

10 PERFECT: ALFRED WILL GROW CLOSER TO THOMAS WAYNE

Alfred and Martha spent more time together as a team than he did with Thomas Wayne, but it's the latter he'll need to get close to if he's going to be hired as his butler and bodyguard. Their friendship will need to deepen and become more firmly rooted in loyalty, and that could be the focus for Season 2.

Fans haven't gotten to see Thomas Wayne and Alfred in action very much, save for a few alternate timeline stories in the Batman comic canon. Season 2 provides the perfect opportunity to see why Thomas trusts Alfred so much with the well-being of his family.

9 HILARIOUSLY BAD: MARTHA AND ALFRED WILL BECOME A COUPLE

While there certainly was a great deal of romantic chemistry between Martha Kane and Alfred in Season 1, fans shouldn't expect to see the pair get together in Season 2. Only viewers who know nothing about the Batman chronology could think the two have a chance together.

Martha Kane needs to become the future wife of Thomas Wayne, and to do that, she needs to grow closer to the American agent, not be distracted by her feelings for Alfred. Seeing how the two of them come together, especially given their sardonic interactions, will be the exciting romantic angle for the next season.

8 PERFECT: ALFRED WILL GO TO GOTHAM

So far, outside of the names of a few characters prominent in the Batman mythos, there haven't been many overt ties to the adventures of the Caped Crusader. Fans are wondering if this might change when Alfred makes a visit across the pond to Gotham City.

The gritty metropolis has been mentioned several times so far by Thomas Wayne, but if he has to return to America on a mission for the CIA, fans may get to see what sort of version Pennyworth has created, with Alfred along as some sort of enforcer.

7 HILARIOUSLY BAD: ALFRED WILL HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE QUEEN

For saving the Queen's life on more than one occasion, Alfred was repaid for his service to queen and country by getting to spend a little intimate time with Her Majesty. This has given rise to the idea by fans that they may continue their relationship into the second season.

While it wouldn't take much conjecture to conclude that she might deign to share her bed with a commoner every once in a while for a cheap thrill, the idea that the Queen would seriously consider Alfred as anything more than "shagging" material presupposes that she doesn't care very much about her reputation.

6 PERFECT: ALFRED WILL LEARN HOW TO BECOME A BUTLER

Alfred's father was a gentleman's gentleman, which caused his son no shortage of vexation because of the stigma of being born into the servant class. They had a tempestuous relationship, and it seemed that Alfred didn't always respect his father's abilities.

That being said, circumstances in the series finale are such that any chance Alfred had of learning from his father how to take up the family trade has been nullified. Fans think that regardless, the next season could see Alfred adopting some of his father's habits that will help him in the future service of the Wayne family and Batman.

5 HILARIOUSLY BAD: BRUCE WAYNE WILL BE ALFRED'S SON

Bruce Wayne isn't expected to be born for several more years as far as the Pennyworth timeline is concerned, but that hasn't stopped fans from wondering about his paternity in the meantime, especially given how close Alfred and Martha Kane have gotten in Season 1.

If there's even a chance that Bruce Wayne is conceived at the end of Season 2, fans have already started speculating that it's possible he could turn out to be Alfred and Martha's son, who for reasons of discretion isn't mentioned.

4 PERFECT: THE SATANIC CULT WILL BE EXPLORED

Martha Kane had a terrifying and kaleidoscopic experience with a Satanic cult in the middle of Season 1 after tagging along to a party with Thomas Wayne's sister. Without explanation she wound up out in a field, stark naked, and in need of answers.

The event was such a detour from the typical proceedings of the series that fans are convinced the second season will see a return to the cult and its enigmatic leader. How did Martha wind up in the field? And what sort of strange rituals did she unknowingly take part in before she got there?

3 HILARIOUSLY BAD: THOMAS WAYNE WILL DIE

Thomas Wayne was shot in the season finale, shortly before becoming intimate with Martha. He tumbled to the floor where she desperately tried to revive him, prompting some fans to speculate that Thomas Wayne will not return for Season 2.

They feel this will set up the perfect opportunity for Martha to become a vigilante figure herself, because in other alternate timelines of the Batman mythos, Martha Kane has taken on a new identity due to tragedy (such as becoming the Joker in Flashpoint). Though Pennyworth is set in an alternative universe, this would alter the Batman origin story so drastically fans probably wouldn't accept it.

2 PERFECT: THOMAS WAYNE AND MARTHA WILL GET TOGETHER

Their relationship got off to a rocky start, what with Thomas Wayne being a callous, self-centered chauvinist and Martha Kane being sick of his misogyny. But it seemed like the two might be coming around to an understanding at the end of Season 1, which could blossom into something deeper.

Clearly Thomas has feelings for Martha the way he attempts to initiate conversation and shield her from harm, though both are done so awkwardly she almost didn't realize the depth of his affections. Fans know the two eventually get married, but for that to happen they need to become more fond of one another first.

1 HILARIOUSLY BAD: ALFRED'S FATHER WILL RETURN FROM THE DEAD

Fans weren't prepared for the sudden death of Alfred's father, much less for it to occur at the hands of his son. But he was a diehard member of the Raven Society and as such, felt its cause was enough to give his life for.

In series like Gotham, villains have come back from certain death before, but in Pennyworth, it seems that Alfred's father is well and truly dead, if not by the gunshot he took than by the explosion he caused. Having him be resurrected for Season 2 would cheapen the significance of his death.
