Psych 2: Lassie Come Home featured three cameos from some of the show’s recurring characters. That’s a bit similar to how the first reunion film was handled; Psych: The Movie included brief guest appearances from Ralph Macchio, John Cena, Jimmi Simpson, and Sage Brocklebank, who all reprised their respective roles from Psych.
The sequel to Psych: The Movie just released as a launch title on NBC’s brand-new streaming platform, Peacock. Titled Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, the movie brought Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill) back from San Francisco to Santa Barbara to help Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), who was recently injured in a shooting. True to form, the usual antics of Shawn and Gus got them in and out of trouble as they searched for the people responsible for Lassiter’s condition. Also taking part in the investigation were Woody the Coroner (Kurt Fuller), Henry Spencer (Corbin Bernsen), Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson), and Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson). In flashbacks and hallucinations, Joel McHale played Lassiter’s father. Sarah Chalke, Kadeem Hardison, and Richard Schiff filled supporting roles.
Shawn and Gus’ long-awaited return to Santa Barbara and their old Psych office was met with a few familiar faces. The two briefly encountered three characters from the USA series. Here’s every cameo in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.
In the Psych season 3 finale, Mary (Jimmi Simpson) was introduced as an expert on serial killers brought in to help the SBPD catch Mr. Yang (Ally Sheedy). For a while, Shawn and Gus suspected that the quirky criminal profiler was a killer himself, but their suspicions of him proved to be unfounded. He was later killed by the mysterious Mr. Yin in the season 4 finale. Despite the fact that Mary was only alive for two episodes, the show found a way to keep him around. He returned in a pre-recorded message in the season 5 finale, and appeared as an angel in Psych: The Musical. He was brought back again in a dream sequence in Psych: The Movie. In Lassie Come Home, Mary - dressed up as a baby -- appeared to Shawn and Gus as a hallucination. Similar to what happened in Psych: The Movie, Mary told Shawn he had to sing to him for him to go away.
Aside from young Shawn (Liam James), police officer Buzz McNab (Sage Brockebank) appeared in more episodes than all other characters who weren’t part of the main cast. Buzz, who was on the show since the pilot episode, was an innocent and unassuming cop who often fell prey to Shawn’s tricks. After several years of being a cop, Buzz was made a detective in the series finale. He had a cameo in the first film, and returned yet again in Lassie Come Home, where Shawn and Gus had a short conversation with a very confused Buzz at a crime scene.
Marlowe has been a recurring character on Psych since early in season 6 when she began dating Lassiter. After going to jail for stealing from a blood bank, Lassiter waited for Marlowe to be released from prison. In season 7, the two got married. She was absent in Psych: The Movie, but returned for the final minutes of Lassie Come Home to visit him in the hospital. The two shared a touching scene as Lassiter stood up for the first time since before his injury.
