The hard part about being in middle school is the ability to find your voice without coming off as dramatic or over the top. That’s the same predicament Kristy Thomas of The Baby-Sitters Club finds herself in over the course of Netflix’s 10-episode first season.
Kristy doesn’t mean to be bossy or controlling but she comes off that way when things in her life seemingly fall apart. She’s a strong young woman with independence and convictions, yet her attitude gets in the way sometimes. But the beautiful thing about Kristy is that she has a vulnerability to her that makes people unable to stay mad at her. Viewers (and her own friends) can’t help for this determined go-getter.
10 Bullied Her Friends: She Called Mary Anne's Dad "Psycho"
After Mary Anne gets grounded for being 20 minutes late past curfew, Kristy goes into crisis mode. Running a business is hard for her to do when one of her best babysitters is grounded. As Kristy says, “I’m trying to run a business here!”
Although it’s out of Mary Anne’s hands, Kristy goes on to insult and belittle her dad. Kristy’s words obviously hurt Mary Anne — especially after calling him “crazy” and a “psycho.” Mary Anne says some unsavory things back to Kristy out of raw emotion, causing a rift between the two friends.
9 Felt Bad: When She Wanted A Dad That Cared About Her
Viewers learn early on that Kristy’s dad left her family and hasn’t been in touch with them in over a year. Although Kristy loves her mother, her father’s absence is a big part of Kristy’s outbursts.
In the episode “Dawn and the Impossible Three,” Kristy finds herself in tears after realizing that the dads in most of her friends' lives are present and want to be there for their kids. Seeing Kristy break down was hard for Dawn (and viewers) as it proves how much pain she was in.
8 Bullied Her Friends: She Wasn't Fond Of Dawn
Dawn was nothing but caring and sweet to Mary Anne when they first met in the cafeteria. As a new girl in town, she wanted to be part of Mary Anne’s circle and join the BSC. The only problem is that Kristy was intimidated by Dawn and didn’t trust many people. Instead of welcoming Dawn with open arms, she let her join the BSC on a trial basis and treated her coldly until she proved herself worthy. Thankfully, Dawn was strong enough to handle Kristy's demands.
7 Felt Bad: She Was Remorseful At Her Mom's Wedding
Elizabeth’s wedding could have gone much smoother had it not been for the disagreement between her and her daughter Kristy.
It was all an unfortunate argument brought on by nerves and fear. After Kristy told her mom she didn’t want her getting married, she wished she never said anything and tried to apologize to her mom on more than one occasion throughout the night. It was big of Kristy to apologize for her wrongs and to move on from the past.
6 Bullied Her Friends: She Made The Girls Feel Guilty About Being Busy
When Kristy created the BSC, her friends were on board with making money and helping Stoneybrook. But when the girls weren’t as available as Kristy would have liked, she made them feel bad about their busy calendars. Instead of coming together and creating a solution, Kristy became a bully. She became more of a tyrant when her soon-to-be stepfather called and asked for a babysitter. Kristy didn’t want any of the girls helping him when he needed it, which didn’t sit well with the group. Claudia even said it was outbursts like that that made her stop hanging out with Kristy in the first place.
5 Felt Bad: When She Lost Louie
While losing her adorable dog Louie was a small scene, it’s a moment that’s all-too relatable for pet owners.
After Mary Anne babysat for Watson, Kristy spied on her while pretending to walk her dog, Louie. Things go haywire when a neighbor frightens Kristy, and Louie runs away. Kristy was humiliated that she was caught spying on her best friend and soon-to-be step-siblings, but she was made to feel worse when she lost her beloved pet. Thankfully, Louie found his way home.
4 Bullied Her Friends: She Asked Stacey If She Was On Hard Drugs
To be fair, the BSC all knew Stacey was hiding something, they just weren’t sure what it was. It wasn’t until the Baby-Sitters Agency tried taking Stacey down that they found out what was really going on.
Stacey had diabetes and before she was diagnosed, she had an attack at her former school, which was then spread around online to shame her. When Kristy first saw the video, instead of waiting for Stacey to come clean, she assumed it was a video of Stacey on “hard drugs,” which only escalated the situation. Thankfully, she changed her tune after Stacey came clean.
3 Felt Bad: When She Was Called "Stupid"
When the Baby-Sitting Agency threatened the BSC, the girls do everything they can to get their name out there. They might be younger but they cared more than the Agency did.
The girls decided to walk around the neighborhood with a cowbell and chest signs. And while they looked silly, they were trying their best to better their business. Sadly, a car filled with older kids saw them walking. One of them said “You look stupid,” before laughing at them and driving away. Kristy looked mortified that she embarrassed the girls and they all walked home with their heads down.
2 Bullied Her Friends: She Wouldn't Sit With Mary Anne At Lunch
Was there anything more upsetting than seeing Kristy ignore Mary Anne in the cafeteria? After Mary Anne’s dad called the girls' parents for them bullying his daughter, they refused to sit with her at lunch. Poor Mary Anne had to sit alone for something that wasn't even her fault. Seeing Kristy fake-laugh with strangers just to annoy Mary Anne was heartbreaking.
1 Felt Bad: She Felt Like Her Mom Was Leaving Her Behind
It’s very obvious to viewers that Kristy doesn’t mean to bully her friends. She adores them so much that she ends up controlling them so they don’t leave her. It’s upsetting. She treats her mom similarly when they disagree because she doesn’t want to be left behind. Kristy is afraid that when her mom becomes a married woman, she’ll forget all about her only daughter. But as the viewers know, Elizabeth could never forget about Kristy.
