Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Officially Confirmed To Launch In 2020

After much speculation, Treyarch Studios confirms that it's working on the next Call of Duty game alongside Raven Software. The game, which has already leaked onto the internet via a Doritos bag as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, will be the fifth mainline entry in the subseries, combining a campaign salvaged from Raven's original project with Sledgehammer Games and a multiplayer mode by Black Ops creator Treyarch. This all lines up with a report from several years ago detailing the problems behind the scenes with both this game and last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Since 2012, Activision has been rotating between three different studios for its yearly Call of Duty releases. Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and newcomer Sledgehammer traded off, with each studio getting three years to work on its entry. While Sledgehammer made a massive debut with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, other futuristic Call of Duty games caused players to fall off in droves. Sledgehammer was originally set to partner with Raven for 2020's Black Ops game.Related: Warzone Season 5 Set To Drop New Faction Into The Game

In a tweet released earlier today, Treyarch and Raven both confirmed that they'd be working on this year's Call of Duty game. There are no further details available at this time, although rumors point to the game being revealed during Sony's August showcase later this week. Generally, Activision would have already revealed this year's Call of Duty by August and started sharing details about it. This year, likely due to the challenges presented by the global pandemic, everything has been pushed back. Still, Activision seems dedicated to releasing the game in Fall 2020 alongside its two other tentpole releases, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2.

Out of the three Call of Duty studios, Treyarch's games have often been met with the most fanfare by series diehards. They also haven't strayed from Call of Duty: Black Ops at all, showing the power of that brand to retain fans. While the new installment will likely feel like a hybrid because of the split between the old campaign and the return to Black Ops-style multiplayer, it should be an improvement over the last Black Ops title, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. In a controversial move, that game's campaign was cut in development for the first time in the franchise's history.

With the official confirmation, eager fans will soon get a look at what Treyarch and Raven are preparing for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Whether this means a return to Mason from the memorable first campaign or a reboot like Modern Warfare that brings characters back in a new context, it's sure to continue Activision's impressive FPS track record.
