The Vampire Diaries: 5 Ways Elena Was Inconsistent (And 5 She Stayed True to Herself)

The Vampire Diaries began when a very human Elena met the vampire, Stefan. She had been grieving the death of her parents and trying to make sense of her life. She didn't seem to fit back into her old life as the popular cheerleader. Sure, she had her friends, but she wasn't the same person as she was before she suffered the tragic loss of her parents. Stefan seemed to understand her, and they bonded, becoming a romantic couple.

While Elena may have felt like she was a different person due to her tragic loss, there are several parts of her that stayed true and consistent throughout the series. Yet, they were also parts of her story and choices that seemed inconsistent to her character.

10 Inconsistent: Being Okay with Vicki's Death

In Season 1, Damon came back to wreck havoc on his brother, Stefan. Damon was very much a villain, and he turned Vicki into a vampire partly due to just plain boredom. Unfortunately, he didn't teach Vicki how to be a vampire, and Vicki became the worst parts of herself.

When she went after Elena, she was killed by Stefan. It was rationalized that Vicki just had too much "hunger" and therefore, killing her was justified. Yet, Stefan was a Ripper, and Elena fought for him despite his hunger. Caroline was also turned into a vampire, and Elena fought for her to be given a chance. While Vicki wasn't her friend like the others, Vicki was Matt's sister. That would have been important to Elena.

9 True to Herself: Helping Stefan With His Ripper Nature

Elena loved Stefan, and she didn't give up on him when he became the Ripper. She sought to help him get ahead of his blood lust. At one time, she tried to get Stefan to control his hunger but feeding just a little bit from her. Since he loved her, he wouldn't drain her.

At another point, she actually recruited Spirit-Lexie to teach her how to bring Stefan back from being the Ripper. Elena never give up on him. She had faith that he could be saved.

8 Inconsistent: Killing Kol and His Sire Line

While Elena may have had no love lost for Kol (Klaus's impulsive little brother), she would have had pause in killing his whole sire line. Elena would have looked at her friend Caroline, who was part of Klaus's sire line, and imagine another young vampire that could have existed because of Kol.

Yet, this thought never seemed to cross Elena's mind. Elena is often the most empathetic of the group, and in this moment, she had no empathy or greater understanding of what it meant to kill Kol.

7 True to Herself: Protecting Caroline

When Caroline was first turned into a vampire, Damon wanted to kill her. Initially, both Elena and Stefan get Caroline away from Damon. Then Damon tries to kill Caroline again in just a matter of seconds. A very human Elena gets between Caroline and Damon, shielding Caroline.

Later in another episode, vampire-Alaric torments Caroline. Elena also protects Caroline, basically pushing her out the door, telling her to run. One of Elena's most redeeming traits is how much she cared for her friends, and these two scenes showed it.

6 Inconsistent: Not Noticing Bonnie and Stefan's Absences

When Elena begins to have a relationship with Damon, it's like she forgets about everyone else. She doesn't find it odd that both Bonnie and Stefan aren't in contact with her, or that she doesn't know much about their whereabouts. If she looked into it, she would have known that Bonnie died to bring back Jeremy, and that Stefan was locked away at the bottom of a body of water--constantly drowning.

While she felt guilty when she learned what happened to them, it was odd of her not to notice or be alarmed about their absences beforehand.

5 True to Herself: Trying to Understand and Forgive Katherine

Katherine had been the thorn in Elena's side for years. The two were doppelgangers, but their personalities couldn't have been more different. Katherine was a survivalist, willing to harm nearly anyone who got in the way of her own life. Meanwhile, Elena cared so much about her friends that she would put herself last.

When Elena learns more about Katherine's human past, she feels sympathy. At Katherine's death bed, Elena says, "I forgive you. You weren't born evil. Your life made you that way." It was a moment that felt very true to Elena, which led to a moment that felt very true to Katherine.

4 Inconsistent: Turning Off Her Humanity

When Jeremy dies, Elena feels too much grief, so she turns off her humanity. This leads to Elena actually trying to kill her friends. Since Elena has been talking to both Stefan and Damon about embracing their positive human emotions, it comes across as pretty hypocritical that she turns her off.

What made Elena an interesting character was her humanity. Without her humanity, she was a shell. It was an odd choice for a character who valued humanity so much.

3 True to Herself: Sacrificing Herself for Her Friends

When Matt and Elena are drowning in a car, Stefan dives in to save Elena. Yet, Elena insists that he save Matt instead. Stefan does honor her request even though it would mean that his love would die. Later, Elena comes back as a vampire since Damon's blood was in her, but she didn't know that at the time. She was more than willing to die so that her friend could live.

Later in the series, Kai links Elena and Bonnie's lives in a Sleeping Beauty spell. This means that while Bonnie is alive, Elena is "asleep." When Bonnie almost dies and sees Elena, Elena is upset. She doesn't want Bonnie to die early, and she'd rather stay in this sleep-state so that Bonnie can live a long and full life.

2 Inconsistent: Overlooking Damon's Actions

Elena forgives and overlooks a lot with Damon. After all, Damon had killed people (including her brother, who luckily was wearing a ring that brought him back to life). He had threatened her friends on more than one occasion. In addition, he tried to make her into a vampire after she said that she didn't want to be one.

In the series, their love is presented as an epic love. However, she overlooked a lot of his negative actions in order to be a couple. This was unlike her. It was too easy of a decision for her.

1 True to Herself: Wanting to Be Human

Although Elena fell in love with vampires, she never wanted to be one. She wanted to live a full life, have children, and then die a peaceful death.

In all of her time with supernatural beings, she valued being human. So when a cure for vampirism was presented, Elena wanted it. This desire to be human never wavered throughout the show.
