Warning: spoilers ahead for Nightwing #74!
Nightwing is back in the DC Universe. After two years of seeing Dick Grayson living as Ric Grayson without his memories of his life in the Bat Family, he's finally back with his memories restored in Nightwing #74. It's also revealed in this issue that Batman never gave up on Dick Grayson, and had been more involved in Dick's journey as Ric than fans might have realized.
Nightwing's return wasn't without its share of struggles. In the last few issues of Nightwing from writer Dan Jurgens and artist Ryan Benjamin, Dick Grayson has had his fragile mind taken over by the Joker, who used the same hypnotic crystal that the Court of Owls tried to use to turn Dick into one of their Talon assassins. Thanks to the crystal, Joker made Dick think he was Dickyboy, the Son of Joker, corrupting him to his side in the Joker War. Joker used his new agent to try and set a trap meant to kill Robin and Red Hood. However, Batgirl arrived and managed to get the crystal out of Joker's hands. Finally, with the crystal in his own hands, Dick was able to regain his true memories as Nightwing.
When the dust settles, Batman himself arrives, telling Dick that he's glad he's back, as he belongs with his family. Dick seems surprised to see the Dark Knight, thinking that the Batman had given up on him. Batman counters, saying that while he might not have been a visible presence in the two years after Dick was shot and lost his memories, he was still present and was continually checking in on his former ward.
Apparently, Batman was more involved in the life of Ric Grayson than fans might have realized. Nightwing #74 shares that Batman was indeed present in the background multiple times, watching over Ric from the rooftops above, which can be seen specifically in Nightwing #50, which takes place not long after Dick was shot. It seems as though Batman can be found in the background in other previous issues of the series as well, like a Dark Knight easter egg.
It's really cool to learn that Batman never gave up on Ric. He cared about him the whole time, and never forgot about the first Robin. Batman seems genuinely glad that Dick is back in action, and that Nightwing has finally returned to the Bat Family. It's perfect timing too, as Batman is going to need all the help he can get as the Joker War continues to escalate and the chaos has only gotten worse. Dick Grayson's hiatus made sense, but Nightwing's return has been long overdue.
Fans of Nightwing should be ecstatic that Dick Grayson is back and ready to fight alongside the Dark Knight in what looks to be the most intense conflict Gotham City has ever seen.
